For newest build, I noticed that on PC Part Picker, their is an incompatibility. I chose a B85 motherboard for my i5 4460 and it mentions that I might need a BIOS update.

Is this a big deal? Do I need to update the BIOS in order for my computer to run? Or will it work fine, the BIOS just won't be updated? I just don't want to have to spend the extra money on an H97 motherboard if the B85 board will work just fine.

If you're unlucky and the board comes with an old BIOS version that predates the launch of the Core i5-4460, you can expect issues - at worst, the system may not POST at all.

If/when the board has an updated BIOS, everything will work absolutely fine.

The annoying part is that updating the BIOS usually requires an already compatible CPU.

However, the 4460 launch was a long time ago. Most B85 boards on store shelves should come with a newer BIOS version that supports it. Most likely there won't be an issue, but pcpartpicker warns you because there is some small risk involved.

If the motherboard is not updated then your i5 4460 wont work and you cant update BIOS without having compatible processor first so that means you would have to find friend that has Haswell CPU (not Haswell Refresh) and borrow that CPU from him then update your BIOS and THEN you can use your i5 4460.

You could buy a second hand G1820 if it is incompatable, They go for cheap and fits in that chipset without a problem.
