HDD issue, weird modus, constant use.

Here is how you do this:

 

Instructions

  1. Press the "Windows" and "R" keys to launch the "Run" dialog. Type "regedit" and press "Enter."

  2. Expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," "System," "Control," "Session Manager," and "Memory Management" by double clicking on each.

  3. Double click "DisablePagingExecutive" in the right side of the window. Change the "Value data" entry from "0" to "1."

  4. Close the registry editor and reboot your machine.

  5. After reboot go into My computer, right click, Properties >Advanced system settings >Performance settings>Performance Options> Change> & change to No Paging file. (If this is not already done)

That's it! Done

Hi LTT members,

 

I'm stuck with an HDD issue which I fail to understand and thus to resolve. To jump right in, here's an image of the drive in question.

The image is in Dutch for those who wonder. It shows that the drive is a primary and simple partition/drive. Which is good. But it's also in "Wisselbestand", I do not know how to translate this properly but roughly it gets translated to "exchange file" or at least something with "exchange".  Trying to find out what it is through google I did not find much help. In Dutch there was literally no support to be found other than, "it can't be removed" from the windows site.

 

How did this happen? By just installing the drive, it's a 2nd hand drive. It's a WD Blue which I am happy about but well, the drive is quite slow now and constantly in use by it seems windows.

 

 

Edit:

 

The issue appears to be about "Virtual Memory Page File" which is located on this drive and keeping it in constant use. I found a way to control it and even remove it. Yet the question remains if that can just be done, or that windows itself does need a file like this.

I guess, I cannot remove the drive at all as in "unallocated space" and I can downsize it to 200GB and not less. I do not know what happened to the drive before I got it apart from that it still works xD

Do you need any of the data/files on the drive?

 

 

Currently it's empty but I was planning on using the drive for recording files from shadowplay/dxtory to.

Well if you want remove all formatting and any chance of anything else on the drive(i.e. rootkits/malware) then I would suggest that you run a debug script on the drive. Then you can go and format it out and it will have no "strange" leftovers or properties that you cannot remove.

I just found, (finally) the english page containing the exact same as the dutch one. And I found that Wisselbestand translates to the following "or any partition that contains the virtual memory paging file"

 

So it appears to be that the drive is having a virtual memory paging file. Either way. It slows the drive a lot.

 

Edit: I found the location of what and where.

 

So it is a virtual memory page file. Which can be controlled. But now the question is, is the file needed by windows?

Well, I haven't ever seen the file in the first place and I got 16GB with OS running on SSD.

Disabling the paging executive is a mixed bag of results. Some swear by it saying that it makes their system faster, but there are tested results that show it really does not improve the speed of anything. You could always give it a try and change it back if it does not accomplish what you are seeking.

@zanthros gave you some good advice and it should resolve your issue.
I would also suggest defragging the drive as it might improve its performance. I would also check the drive for errors and if it performs properly with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Chhc7L. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive and see if anything is out of the ordinary. Post here or PM me if you need help with that. :)
 
The Pagefile is basically where your computer dumps the data from the RAM when its full. You can control its size, move the file or even delete it (which I wouldn't advise).
