It takes my computer 12 min to load to my desktop (another 8 for a bug in Windows to stop eating all my RAM) and programs are taking longer to load than I'm used to. This computer is around 6 years old and I think the hard drive might be coming to the end of its service life.

Should I get a new hard drive and just clone this one?

Will be worth getting a SSD. The boot times will be almost instant.

I have too much data and a ssd with the same capacity would be really expensive

Hey User1868,

What is your drive's brand and model? I would suggest doing a defragmentation and see if it improves anything. There are also a number of tools that can clean your drive and registry from unwanted and unnecessary files and junk and speed up your system.
I would also strongly suggest to check your drive's health with a diagnostic utility and see if it has any problems. I would recommend using the one provided by your manufacturer for the most accurate results.

I have a 500 GB hard drive.....

So use the 500gb drive for mass storage and throw in a 120gb ssd for the boot drive and a few commonly used programs.

Also going to Start > system configuration > startup > disabling all the random crap from running at startup would also help quite a bit (if you haven't already disabled all the crap). Just be sure to look up what each program does before disabling it.

I really don't know. I bought a built computer (not custom) and on the manufacturers website they don't name the hdd specifically. I have done defragmentation in the past, but it didn't find any files that needed it.

Can I only transfer Windows to the new ssd? I haven't found any solution to this problem. I have only found ways to copy the whole drive

You can find the drive's brand and model in Device Manager, BIOS and in Disk Management as well as with benchmarking and diagnostic utilities. :) Do check the drive's health and see if there is something wrong with it or the problem comes from elsewhere.

I would recommend running WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool over that WD Blue drive in order to check the drive's health and make sure the data on it is safe and there's no risk of losing it. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=xkWLPN

I think it must have been a one time event because now I have no problems

Checking the drive with the tool won't hurt and will just reassure you that it's fine and safe to use. I'm happy it's all good now. :) Do post back if the issues persist in the future.
