I was thinking about getting this GPU, http://www.saturn.at/mcs/product/_MSI-R9-390-Gaming-8G-V308-041R-,90452,384149,2169050.html?langId=-15the      (R9 390 MSI) it has 8gb vram so I was thinking about replacing my 970 with this GPU, im assuming they are similar power but the 8gb vram will help down the road I think. What do you think? I plan to play games at high settings down the years even at 30fps eventually. Do any of you know the temperature or the noise level of this GPU? Or is it too new?

I think that by the time you'll run out of VRAM on the 970 you'll want so much more power anyways.

I would stay with the 970.

But they are both the same price, many games are taking over 3gb vram now and in like 1-2 many games will take more than 4 I think.

Okay, if you're pretty convinced (I don't know which I'd go for!), then I'd see which titles you want to play are better optimized for which platform - like Nvidia optimized games and/or AMD optimized ones.

Sig under construction.

We are talking WAY down the road here mate.

even at 1440p, you can't max out the vram (3.5GB) of the 970. There are exceptions offcourse but buying a completely new card which has similar performance is wasting your probably hard earned money.

The 970 still qualifies as a "new" card, i would wait until atleast the new Nvidia series. At the very least wait and see what the fury cards will bring. one thing is for sure, it's that the prices of current GPU's will go down.

When the fury cards are coming, i can bet my left testicle that pricing of the (as an example) 980Ti will go down.

EDIT: Every once in a while, all PC enthusiasts get a very irritating itch to upgrade. if i were you i wouldn't scratch it.  :P

I will get the money back from the 970, I can return it on amazon and buy the R9 390, would that be worth it? Same performance but more vram? I am a bit worried about amd optimization i hear games run better on nvidia cards.

Not really.

By the time you actually will need it some new card will have been released.

And why invest in a 8gig card from AMD, when Fury is right around the corner with HBM??? plz.. explain!

i hear games run better on nvidia cards.

That really depends on the title, and the developers relationship with the card manufacturers

EDIT: But with all said, it is YOUR money and you choose how to spend it. You know all the facts to be able to make a choice for yourself. But personally when i'm hesitating a choice like that, i probably should wait alittle longer and it usually pays off ;)

EDIT2: As a rule of thumb, don't future proof based on what you might purchase down the road.    Future proof based on fact's and information.

If you know you are going out to buy a 4K monitor tomorrow and want to crank up the settings on GTA V, then by all means. But other than that it's hard to justify.

Is my 970 defected? I can tweak games like the Witcher 3 to allow as much as 2GB of ram to store textures on to limit pop in, have everything sitting at ultra and afterburner still records 1.5GB used in Witcher and a little more in GTA 5... 2 of the biggest releases so far in terms of graphics...

unless you plan to go 4k No even then it seems silly, your card can only go so fast, by the time you fill 4gb most cards on the market would struggle to power that, 390X included, its what like 10% faster?.

Unless your streaming to twitch and use your vram in those sort of ways I see hardly anyone realistically being able to fully use those large amounts. I think vram size is being overstated with these 8GB cards, all power to AMD and I hope they have a great release but having 8GB on those cards is almost always going to be useless. A much better and more sensible buy would be a fury, pending benchmarks.

But games like shadow of mordor use 3.6gb on ultra for me on my 970

(no my 970 is not defect it is quiet and temps are good, but im still worried about the vram in a year or two)

when is fury coming out? And what price

The Radeon R9 Fury X will come out in 4days (June 24)  650USD

The Radeon R9 Fury will debute alittle later (July 14)        550USD

Also recommend using google, might find out the answer to your questions faster, rather than waiting for somebody at the other end replying ;)

You will be fine bro, maybe my afterburner is playing up...

Think of it this way...

Mr.970 can carry 100kg at a fast pace (60fps) before he starts to slow down... his bag (vram) lets him carry up to 150KG more then enough seeing he will only ever being able to effectively carry 100kg

Mr 390 can carry 105kg at a fast pace (60fps) before he starts to slow down... his bag (vram) lets him carry up to 300kg.

Their are exceptions but for your purpose this fits... Even in the future, as you said, you are happy lowering fps to 30 to maintain good graphics... the rules still apply. Selling your 970 to get a 390 is bananas to say the least, selling it to buy and also upgrade to a fury could be a decent upgrade. But don't do it in a desperate hope to be "future proof" there is no such thing.
