D5 dead after installing pump mod

Go to solution Solved by Zyphron,

your not getting it the pump has a air bubble in it most likely flip the hole case so its like the other res then turn it on if you haven't burnt the pump out it will work all. it takes is a few secs dry and there dead ive been told. they need the water to lube them selfs. show me a picture of the pump res full since if fluid ant coming back up thru the tube that's attached then you got air in the top of the d5 did you pull apart the molex connecter .

edit one other thing did you  remove the  yellow and black wires if so  did you replace them correctly ? if your unsure pull them both out and just put the connecters into the female side and see if the pump turns on if flipping them doesn't work then its probably dead if you have made sure its getting water  as i said above

Might want to re-read his post, he is saying he is getting ZERO power to the pump this has NOTHING to do with the location of his Rez or the fact that its going to suck in air

even so air in the pump is not "bad' even if its sucking in air. whats Bad is when the pump is run DRY no water no nothing Just ceramic on the Fitting which will grind it away

if there is water moving through the pump it means its being Lubricated and Wont cause any issue.  the D5 series uses the coolant/fluid as a Way to cool and Lubicrate the Cermanic bearing.

Granted, Air in the pump will make Excess Noise and lower the performance of the pump by orders of Magnitude.

FOR OP:

a Zero start issue sounds like a power connection issue,

Check the Molex Plug make sure both Prongs are making contact. and make sure yellow wire is Plugging into yellow wire and Black into one of the blacks.

the Pump wont star up on the 5 volt line. D5's need a min of 7 volts to start

if you have a variable speed pump whit the Dial on the pump, check the speed. sometimes a 1 on the speed wont let the Pump start. Make sure it will by Ramping it to 5.

PWM version. Set it to Max on the bios or Unplug the PWM cord. the electronic controller on the pump  should default to 80/100% speed

check the Pump Housing for corrosion around where the Wires Enter the Pump if the inner seal goes sometimes it will cause Damage.

Finally. check the Pump Housing and top cap on the XSPC reservoir you want to be looking for Stuff that could cause the Pump to stick.. take the pump off, install the old top cap, and Prime with a bit of water... see if that works, If it does, your new Housing has issues.

if all of these fail.... then its time for a new pump. the D5 has very few issues and to me its sounds Power related

I was doing a system rebuild and installed a bitspower pump mod to my XSPC Photon 270 pump/res last month. Well this week I decided to finish and start bending pipes. I got some water in the res and the pump connected to a separate power supply, psu ran fine. But the pump just wouldnt kick on. I tried switching the position on the wired in the connector as well. Anyone got any ideas, or have run into  similar problem?

stand the case on the back or which way so the pump is down . 90 degrees to the way you have it in your picture like your other res is shown that way getting to pump primed is much quicker .you have air getting in which WILL KILL IT   . did you run it dry ?  if so it will not work or if it does it wont work to what it used to be able to . again you can have it laying on its side but the res has to be filled at least 95% so air doesn't get sucked into it while it runs

@Zyphron - good advice there. If possible plug something else in that molex plug and see if it is delivering power, or test with a multimeter etc.

The only thing that hasn't been covered, would be to strip it back down and try to make sure it works with the original pump top. It may have got jammed by accident when installing the new pump top / res base. Long shot, but cheaper than buying a new pump.
