So recently I installed a new hard drive into my PC using a molex/sata power+sata data cable into my PC, I took all the proper precautions using an anti static wrist strap and I didn't even touch a single sensitive component. Before there was weird behaviour where I would have to plug my computer in while the mains are on for the PC for the on off switch to work, however now the PSU is on, the mains are on and the motherboard LED is not lit, when I press the power it does not turn on and when I short the power pins it doesn't turn on. Could this be by wondrous amounts of misfortune static damage?

If you were properly grounded, then I doubt ESD is the cause. Do you suffer from dry skin at all? If your skin isn't moist, the wrist strap doesn't work - I have to test my wrist strap at work and if my skin is too dry, I fail the test because I'm not grounded. If nothing is lit, make sure the power cable is secure in the power supply, and double check all cables.

I don't really suffer from dry skin, plus there is a green LED that illuminates when there is power to the PC, this just won't turn on now which leads me to believe that it's the PSU. The only way I could get the PC to turn on before I installed the hard drive was to wiggle the power cable a little bit so you hear the electricity crackle in the socket, probably no good for the PSU but it worked every time.

I wonder then if there is poor contact in the power input socket.

Okay thanks, I'll probably take it in to get it diagnosed at PC world or nova tech or something.
