Hey guys, so I am soliciting advice on which GPU(s) to buy for my new X99 based system.

I have the budget to buy SLI 980 Ti's, however I would love to save a lot of money if possible. I was approached by a friend online trying to get rid of his gtx 780 Ti Classified Kingpin cards with EK waterblocks. He is looking for $900 for the pair.

Should I spend the money for brand new or will the 780's suffice for a next gen x99 system at a fraction of the cost?

edit: It is also important to note the cards are in great shape, hardly used.

One 980 Ti would probably do just fine for you. The 780 Ti, no matter the condition, really doesn't stand up to the mini-Titan at all.

You could also wait a couple days and grab a Fury X.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Yes I am pretty strictly nvidia and it'll be used for casual 1440p and some 4k gaming. Why not the 780's? They're inexpensive, with the only thing limiting them being the VRAM.

yes you need at least one 980ti for 4k gaming

and yeh you would be better off with  970s than 780s

but for that price 1 980ti is better than both 780s with water cooling

  • 2 weeks later...

Why? It does poor compared to a GTX 980 Ti for the same price, it's out of stock everywhere, and the pump noise is horrific.

Can you not see that this post was made before we got real benchmarks?
