Internet Issues

So my family upgraded out internet, supposedly 3.5-7.0mb/s, and online speedtests show that.But when i try downloading a game from steam or a file from the internet, i get at most 500kb/s. Any ideas on whats wrong or may be causing this?I am using ethernet.

Speeds are quoted in Megabits per second (Mbps or mb/s), downloads are shown in Megabytes per second (MB/s). There is nothing wrong here.

As stated above a Megabit is not equal to a Megabyte.  So your scale 3.5 (megabit)/s is ~440kb/s.  7(megabit)/s =875kb/s.  There is 8 megabits in 1 megabyte.

 

@Mandrew be careful of your abbreviations.  mb is NOT equal to MB.  There are 1024kb in 1 MB(Megabyte).  The correct abbreviations for Megabit and Megabyte are Mb(megabit) and MB (Megabyte).

Glad we could help.  It is a slightly confusing topic for a lot of people because they see Mb or mb and associate it with MB.

There are around 1000Kilobytes in a Megabyte, yes. But there are 8 Megabits in a Megabyte. 

 

Theoretically, your maximum download speed is 0.9 MB/s (7.5 mbps). Realistically, you won't get that all the time. 0.5-0.6 MB/s is around what you can expect from your connection.

8 bits in a byte, divide your bandwidth by 8 and you get the amount of MEGABYTES per second.

 

EX: 10 megabits persec = 1.25 megabytes persec
