$2000 Gaming Rig

Go to solution Solved by Curufinwe_wins,

I mean it will work fine. But note that unless doing 4k those GPU's are insanely massive overkill, and for more future "proof" I would rather grab a stronger cooler/cpu/16gb ram etc etc.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9n4Z3CThis is a similar budget build I am putting together for a relative. Once the 980ti shows up its like 1900 USD, but there are slightly different requirements which result in less optimal setups for a pure price to performance build.

So my friend wanted to get a new computer so he decided to make his own gaming computer. He had a price range of around $2000. It could be more or less by like $200. He asked for my help and I got him this. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wJXVQ7Can you guys help if I need to improve anything?

If gaming at 1080p or 1200p, there is no reason for 2 graphics cards, let alone 980ti... I am building a computer for a friend over the next two days that was in almost exactly the same budget, and it will be much more versatile (I'll get into it in a moment). It's extremely unbalanced to have those two graphics cards without 16 or 32 GB of ram. I'd even go so far as to say that the lack of RAM makes the system almost useless for day to day... (Just like Linus, I am a tab whore in Chrome).

For my friend, we have this:

Fractal Design Define R5

Asus Maximus VII Formula

Core i7 4790k

Corsair H100i

16 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro (Red)

Asus Matrix GTX 980

and I forget what the PSU is... I think it was EVGA

Ducky Shine 4 keyboard

All of that was had for a grand total of $2,010.96 or something plus or minus 50 cents.

It will be much faster in CPU stuff, and the RAM will really come in handy if he has a ton of tabs open, or several programs. Also, I would say that the Fractal Case is definitely worth the extra $50, since it's such an awesome case. Anyway, there are several corners that were definitely cut on the system in order to get the two 980ti's. In my opinion, the sacrifices made will not be worth the benefit of the two graphics cards. I personally have a reference 980 that isn't overclocked or anything, and it performs incredibly well in GTA V and the Witcher 3, and I doubt I will need anything any time soon. So much so that my next upgrades will probably be the CPU RAM and mobo (I'm happy with them, but LGA 2011 would be awesome.) Anyway, you should cut out the second graphics cards and balance out the system more effectively. I very much doubt that your friend needs the power of two 980ti's, since that much horsepower really only makes sense in 4K+ applications.

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)
