I have a 1TB HDD that I used to have in a machine many months ago and all of a sudden windows stopped recognizing it, after having tried just about everything I know I still cannot get it to recognize. I am pretty sure that it's not detected in the BIOS either, but I can check again.

The drive didn't make any clicking noise or anything like that, it simply stopped working.

If the drive ends up having been dead, no skin off my back I can recycle it, would like to know.

The drive is a WD Caviar Green from 2009, so suspicion  that the drive in fact is dead is fairly high for me.

Can you hear the drive spin up at all?

Not really hear it since it's a Green drive, they are supposed to be low power and noise, but I can feel it for sure.

Perhaps the motor died for the heads?

2009?

That drive if not already dead is sure to die soon.

The drive was going strong right up until the day that it ceased to work, normally when a drive dies there's some form of warning signs.

Sometimes those warnings can be hard to notice.

However I'm sure someone with HDD failure experiences may help you soon.

This is true, it's been quite a few years since I had a drive fail on me, I mean I have a 200GB Drive from 2006 that is still going strong :P

Hi there @r-4!

I'm sorry to hear about the problem you're experiencing with your HDD. Since the drive is not detected in BIOS you may try connecting it to a different computer and see if it's recognized there. In case it's not, then the best option in order to retrieve the data stored on it will be to consult with a data recovery company:

However, if it's detected, backup any crucial information you have there and you can run a test with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics to see if any errors or bad sectors will be detected by the program:

Let me know how it went. :)

If this post helped you, please like and choose it as a best answer.   :)

No dice, this drive has been tested in a good 3 or 4 other systems since I have determined that it was dead. I have found that the drive spins up, seeks a time or two then power down, so unfortunately it is dead entirely, which isn't a big deal to me as I have already since gotten the data back.

I tend to not keep a lot of overly important or unrecoverable data on my drives (movies, random use files etc.)
