Hi guys

im interested in overclocking bbut i want to know what is a 'safe' amount to overclock? 20%?

i will be using MSI afterburner and will be overclocking a GTX 970M so i can run Games like AC Unity and COD Advnaced warfare on just that bit better FPS

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I would not recommend overclocking a laptop, as the cooling is not sufficient and you will run into trouble when overclocking.

"20%" for a GPU is a lot, you probably won't get that high. The only thing that can make your overclock unsafe, is adding too much voltage, but I doubt you'll be able to tinker with the voltage anyhow.

But again, OCing a laptop -> Bad idea.

thanks so much for replying.

was looking for a small boost in terms of FPS because im coming from console and GTX 970M looks like (based on reviews) a card that can handle alot but looking to Play the newer games

(2014 and lower) at just that little bit better. seen this card on AC unity at 40FPS on Ultra? thought id try 45-50 FPS haha.

thanks anyway guys. will take your advice :)

Stop using ultra presets, and you will easily get beyond 60fps. If you tweak settings you should be maxing out the display.

Just checking, you do know the 970m is a laptop GPU and not a desktop one

Turn some unnecessary settings down so you can achieve higher frame rates. Everything doesn't have to be absolutely maxed out; especially settings that hurt performance more than any gains.

And overclocking a laptop is a good way to kill off the lifespan. That's what desktops are for. To be frank, I never understood why people game on laptops. But to each their own.

contrary to what the above has been posted. the 970m and 980m have been extremely well hailed as OC beasts, BEFORE nvidia used two different methods to block OC (one in recent bios shipments and the first in drivers although that was supposed to be unblocked (I don't know if they were).

That said without a custom BIOS they are limited to +135 MHz on the core clock. (For example I have a 660m bioflashed to +500 MHz up to 1300 MHz, with a relatively small mV boost).

Honestly though with a custom BIOS without mV changes the temp will not change very much and you can likely get at least the free +135 MHz.

I would recommend (AND THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE GAMING ON LAPTOPS) using a stand cooler while under long loads (I have the CM Notepal x3) which makes a night and day difference in temperatures with or without overclocks.

TD:LR if you can overclock using MSI afterburner just set it to the +135, sit back and enjoy the free FPS.

EDIT: I overclock laptops to increase their usable lifespan (AKA I can actually run DA:I on it with an OC while without its toast), because if my overclock reduces the lifespan of the components from 8 years to 5 years, but the laptop is already below min recommendations for gaming in three years, who cares?
