I've got the original rome, and I love it, although graphics and control of units is not as good as it is these days. It's definitely worth buying, although I think I got mine for like £2 as it was a preowned copy. There's also some fairly decent mods for it, which I haven't tried out but might do at some point.

im gonna wade in to this dirty water and say Rome 2, on sale with a few bits of dlc, all the latest patches and a few workshop mods and its absolute gold, the best total war ive played.

A lot of people shat on Rome 2 when it came out but now its fixed and cheap, and from my experience (around 200 hours) definitely worth it.

Attila is good, but somehow it just doesn't feel right, its lacking a certain something the others have.

Rome 2 is alright but a disapointment in my view. I think they could have done better. Rome total war the original is still a great game, as is empire total war, despite a lot of bad reviews. However the clear winner in my mind is Shogun 2. Good graphics, unit diversity, controls and gameplay
