Hey guys just wanted so opinions on whether to get a 1440p @ 144hz or 4k monitor @ 60hz. Pretty much going to be using it for gaming as well as video editing (which is why I cant decide between them). The 144hz would be ideal for FPS games and just gaming in general. however the 4k would be perfect for video and picture editing as well as 3D building and rendering (though I don't think that monitor resolution or refresh rate would really matter with 3D building and rendering). This is going into my soon to be upgraded system as follows

gigabyte G1 motherboard X99

i7 5820k 6-core CPU @ 4.0GHz

16GB crucial ballistics DDR4 RAM @ 2400Mhz (will eventually probably near the end of the year get another 16GB)

1x samsung 850 pro 256gb SSD

2x intel 530 128gb SSD RAID 1

*Currently 1x gigabyte GTX 980 (reference)

*As soon as it comes out ill be upgrading to 2x gigabyte GTX 980ti G1 GPU's

EDIT: forgot to add my PSU which will be an EVGA supernova 1000W P2 80 plus platinum certified

I would love to game at 4k but it is currently only available at 60Hz (granted that is what I play at now). Can you really notice the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz? Should I wait and get a higher refresh rate monitor when it comes it (it has to be sometime in the next year I have to think? right?). What is your guy's opinion? If it were your money how would you spend it?

That is actually one of the monitors I was considering. However that is slightly more money than I would like to spend (would like to keep it at ~$900 or below)

if you are editing video at 1080p, get a 1440p monitor. unless you are professionally editing 4k video, you don't really need to be able to view 4k

i would say it is 100% worth it, you would use that monitor for years.

you could save a little money by just getting another 980 instead of 2 980ti

Seeing as windows 10 is supposed to fix scaling issues with windows it's less of a problem to go full 4K. On the other hand I have the TN swift and I think its pretty much perfect. Now that ASUS is launching an ips version I don't think there's a better monitor for Nvidia users. I think higher refresh rates are worth the money.. Adding G-sync to that is a cherry on top :)

4K g-sync, not sure if they have that out yet.

Its a thing, my acer xb280hk 4k monitor has g sync :)

OP I'd go 4k :) reason being I have it and it's worth every penny.

1440p even at 144hz seems like a downgrade to me

That is actually one of the monitors I was considering. However that is slightly more money than I would like to spend (would like to keep it at ~$900 or below)

Go with 1440p.  Either 16:9 (2560x1440), or 21:9 ultrawide (3440x1440).

There are three reasons:

(1) The market for 4K is still immature, as defined by the fact that there are a limited selection of IPS displays, a limited selection of refresh rates, a limited selection of VRR panels, and a decently high price premium at this point.  I'm sure all of this will change 18-24 months from now, as manufacturers release more models / selection, with a wider selection of features, and lower prices.  But for the time being, 4K is still an immature market / ecosystem.

(2)  As of today, you can't buy a single video card that can drive every PC game at 4K native resolution with all detail settings cranked up, iat >60fps framerates, in every game out there.  I don't know how important this is to you, but it's a consideration.  By comparison, 16:9 1440p or 21:9 1440p can be driven much easier, since you're dealing with fewer pixels.

(3) This is a matter of personal opinion, but I'd say that the leap from 1080p --> 1440p is a large jump in image quality;  but the jump from 1440p --> 4K is a smaller jump in image quality.  You're not really "getting" anything from 1440p --> 4K, except slightly higher pixel density.  However, the jump to a 21:9 monitor is one of those "large jump" scenarios because of the wider monitor resolution.  Gaming becomes much more immersive, and productivity becomes much easier to use.  Many people consider 21:9 1440p to be about equivalent in experience to having a dual-monitor setup, without the bezel in the middle of the two screens.

And I don't know if you're still looking, but a Dell U3415W 34" 3440x1440 curved 21:9 ultrawide display is around $880 on Amazon... which is a fantastic deal.  Anything under $1100 for a 34" 21:9 curved display is a pretty darned good deal at this point.

Idk. Not paying too close attention to it as I'm not looking for a new monitor for a while. If I had to guess sometime this year  :P
