@General_Led

I hate that no one has asked you why........

Why do you need optical out from your computer?

I would assume he needs it for a surround input for a speaker system (hopefully not for a headset)

That's exactly why I'm asking  :) Optical is probably the worst connection these days only because fewer video games are supporting surround sound through it. I have no idea why! But strangely enough, optical is the best for music in my subjective testing.

Lots of things only have optical (cheap Logitech 5.1 systems and the like)

But if it's for a headset then it's just stupid, like surround headsets are

I have no idea how anyone would cope with a 5.1 system that only accepts optical. I was pretty furious when I found out some games just don't support more than two channels.

I thought all surround headsets were USB?

Umm well a couple different things. Speaker set up and I'm trying to get a deal for a dac/amp combo, however it only accepts optical or coaxial.

Weerrll, I would suggest that if you don't have optical out already, you should get a USB DAC. Spending more money and putting more components in the pipeline is probably not optimal. You could certainly get an Asus Xonar with s/pdif but that seems silly.
