Hello again LTT members.
Today I bought a i3 4160 (finally decided for intel cause sales) and a B85M E45 MSI mobo, also I had a Kingston hyperXblu 8gb 1333mhz over there. I used some parts from my old pc (it was a q8400 rig), an Asus gtx750ti 2gb, 500gb barracuda 7200rpm, and 650w psu and h23 window case.

After installing all the components the i3 rig just shows black screen and no BIOS, I tried to power it without the gpu and hdd, it's the same, just black screen (also did the troubleshooting steps), maybe it's the mobo cause the ram is pretty new. I've been building pcs over 6 years ago, still using the q8400 by now, any suggestions?

My display doesn't support DVI, shame on me

Are you sure you don't need to update the motherboard ? Maybe you need to flash it.

It's updated but tomorrow I will go to the store for the support

Try clearing cmos.

I've already done that but nothing:(

That motherboard needs BIOS version 10.4 or higher to work with a 4160 because it's one of the newer Haswell refresh CPU's so you might want to look into that.

It's supposed to support Haswell r cpus, at least that's what I've read from the board page, that's why I bought it

try plugging it into the VGA port then :P or plug it into whatever the opposite is to what you have it plugged into now.

@ubw

That motherboard and processor aren't compatible without a BIOS update.  In order to do this BIOS update, you need a Haswell.  Not Devil's Canyon(which is what you have) CPU.

You have a few options:

Find someone who has a Haswell processor and ask them to borrow it to do the BIOS update.  This will be the cheapest, and easiest solution.

Return the processor and buy a Haswell i3

Return the motherboard and buy an H97 mobo.

I'm sorry that you got incompatible components.  Its a really shitty thing that companies are doing, advertising it as "supports devil's canyon."  While it does support DC, it is only with a BIOS update, and if you don't already own a Haswell CPU, you are SoL.

Where did you buy the CPU and motherboard?  Do you know anyone who has a Haswell CPU?

I bought in here, in Peru, tomorrow I will go to the store, maybe they can update it or maybe I should put some more cents and buy MSI z97 (gaming series is what they have right now) if they take the b85 back, should that be better?

Ok, since you bought it locally, and they advertised it as compatible, I would first kindly, emphasis on kindly, ask them to update the BIOS for you because they sold you stuff that doesn't work together, and as a PC shop, they should know better.  Or ask them to replace the Devil's Canyon i3 for a Haswell i3.  Or maybe one of the people who work at the shop owns a Haswell CPU and would be willing to help you with the BIOS update after their shift.

I would only go for the Z97 if you plan to buy an unlocked i5 or i7 in the future.  Going from B85 to Z97 is probably pretty expensive, and it isn't going to benefit you at all until you buy an unlocked i5/i7. If you do think that you will eventually buy an unlocked i5/i7, then maybe consider buying Z97, but I think that should be your very last option.

They sold you stuff that doesn't work together.  It is their job to know what works together.  They didn't do their job correctly.  Either unknowingly or knowingly, it is their responsibility to the customer to provide you good service, and working components.

Right, going to the store to fix that problem in some hours, I will not be using SLI/CFX since I always buy single gpus, pointless to use a z97 without oc/sli/cfx, thanks again

If they have an H97 you could go for that, but again, you shouldn't have to spend more money for an error on their part.

It was the RAM?  That is fuuuuunky.

So what happened?  You took it to the store, they tried it with some different RAM and viola!?

Well I'm glad we got it working!

Yea, RAM has gotten very cheap lately.  The thing is, your motherboard only support 1600Mhz if I recall.  The difference in performance between 1333/1600/1866 is nothing, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm just happy that we got it working for you without having to spend any extra money.

They were recommending me to get a z97 gaming 5 but I told them I will not be using the extra oc potential and PCIe, they was like: OK... You know about your stuff lol
