I think 3 has a bit better story. NV has a main story that can have many possible endings if that's your thing. FO3 has a lot of downtown DC areas. NV has deserts instead. NV has a basic weapon modding system and a pretty decent follower system. 

 

 

Honestly, Google "fallout 3 vs nv". I'm not being facetious. There is a ton of info out there to answer your question in detail. Or, you might just decide to grab both in a sale.

I prefer Fallout 3 by a long shot, but New Vegas works well with Win7/8, unlike Fallout 3 which you'll need to check some files first.
