Linux?

As an IT student I would like to work on a linux based system next year. Which distro's do you guys recommend? I like the looks and terminal (panteon) of elementary os.

Note: my laptop is about 4y old, amd dual core 2.7ghz, 8gb ram and I might put an 120gb ssd in it if my budget allows it.

I use Linux Mint Mate and I highly recomend it. It is similar to windows but has its own style, and it's easy to customise.

I made my terminal semy-transparent, looks really good

I'm actually an IT student myself right now, and Xubuntu has been perfect on my 9 year old laptop (Core 2 Duo T7600, 4GB RAM, 240GB SSD) and I have to say that its very good. You wouldn't be able to use Panteon as the terminal (the current one is good anyway-and most if not all commands cross over with OSX) but the battery life increase is insane, just over 4 hours under Windows 7, 5 and a half under XP, and over 6 and a half under Xubuntu (tested and metered).

Honestly the distro you get doesnt really matter, because you can install the same stuff on any distro for the most part. The only thing that is really different is the desktop enviorment/window manager. So get whatever you think looks good from the start, then install all the stuff you want.

Linux Mint is one of the best. Stay away fron Ubuntu, cause they spy on you through their U.I.

Yea. Look it up. They collect anything you type into the dash and sell that info to amazon and other companys, for them to make taliored ads. Ubuntu server is still fine since it's headless, and any ubuntu variant, that dosen't use unity is also fine.

Oh right, the Unity based version pretty muched slapped me in the face with that when I did the live trial (borwser based)-the Amazon logo is right there. Xubuntu seems to miss out on that, no sign of Amazon at all.

Yea. Even befor they started to use it to spy I thought it sucked. The old Gnome version was better.

Which is where Linux Mint Mate comes in. Though I find that overall Xfce seems to be the best balance of features after Gnome pretty much got killed.

I like cinnamon though. It is a little slower, and not as stable, but it looks nice, and has cool features, and still has all the cool stuf from gnome 2.

To each there own-I normally don't care at all as long as it has some semblance of a start menu (which is where I said screw Gnome 3 and Unity).

Yea. I do use the xfce mint on my old ibm think pad, and on my server.

I should really set a computer up purely for Distro testing-loads of choices.

No need to set up a computer for that, just a virtual machine. That way you can even compare multiple distros simultaneously and without the hassle of multibooting.

True, but I've got plenty of HDD to spare and my P4 631 unused.

You can achieve the E OS look in a lot of distros. However I will recommend going with something that has a lot of support, so Ubuntu or Linux Mint.
