Need new headphones 100-200ish $

Tarrus

Hey there,

I am looking for a new pair of headphones. It must have good audio quality and I like headphones which have a good bass. It must also be comfortable because I will be using it for atleast 4 hours a day for music, gaming etc...

I never thought about a headset because I dont like the big mic's attached to it. But headphones are better in sound I guess?

What do you guys suggest?

Thank you.

broken record reporting in here, recommending the audio Technica ATH-M50x

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86

then if you like me don't like the stock pads, get these:

http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-EDT250V-Headphone-Pads-Black/dp/B0016MF7W2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1433749309&sr=1-1&keywords=beyerdynamic+dt250+pads

these two combined was the one-two punch that made me decide I'd found my perfect headphone. the replacement earpads are so good I still have yet to put the original pads back on in I don't know how many years. comfort is awesome, breath-ability makes long wearing fantastic. I've forgotten if the sound changed, but I have no intention of going back to the original pads.

definitely recommended!

edit: a few final notes. I have the M50 limited edition that I have modified to have a removable cable, long before the M50x existed, which is just the m50 with a removable cable. i originally purchased mine for $160 about 3ish years ago and I have had no desire to buy new headphones since. my sources are just my S4 and a ipod nano with a Line-out and a cheap FIIO E6 amp, which is unnecessary for these headphones unless I want the bass to start shaking my ear-lobes violently(no joke) the noise isolation isn't as good as my mother's Bose QC15, but it's good enough for studying on the noisy floor of my university library or even in the student commons without hearing the noise around me. it was better with the stock pads, but I consider it to be almost a completely different headphone with the new pads on the comfort side alone.

I would definitely not suggest a ATH-M50x for gaming. Also he said he wanted good bass which isn't the case in the M50's.

I read that ATH-M50x has not that great of a bass. In comments where people bought it.

I dont mind open or closed I think.

I thought about Sony XB950BT. Read almost every comment on the internet and nobody is complaining about these. And its wireless. Almost same quality as wired ones. Read lots of people upgraded from wired to wireless for these headphones.

it's not a upgrade from wired to wireless, wireless arn't very good when it comes to sound quality. I would get a DT 880/990 or Fidelity X2, if you want closed go with a DT 770. Depends on what your preferences are.

to speak on the bass, it's rather balanced. it goes deep but it isn't over-pronounced. the bass capability on these headphones is great when amped and EQ'd, but the balance only puts it a *little* bit forward, but that's my subjective opinion.

objectively, the bass looks pretty heavy in the graphs available from inner fidelity compared to other headphones

you can check them out here

http://www.innerfidelity.com/headphone-data-sheet-downloads

with the m50x graph here:

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AudioTechnicaATHM50x.pdf

according to the graphs, the m50 has 5db more bass at 20hz when you account for the fact that the m50x graph is shifted down overall, compared to the DT880 33ohm headphone

I would buy these 100% "if" I didnt read too many comments/reviews about lacking of good bass or a higher bass volume.

the 30 hz square wave also looks a lot like 30 hz square wave, which the DT 880 fails to reproduce. this is supposedly a good indicator of bass response, but seeing as I don't have the DT880 myself, I can only speculate based on the objective information I can find.

edit: the DT 880 datasheet is here: http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/BeyerdynamicDT88032ohm.pdf

So your comparing something not known for it's strong bass with something else also known for not having strong bass.

I'm sorry. I assumed as I figured that you'd be recommending solutions with strong bass when he specifically requested "good bass"

do the DT 990 have better bass than the M50x, as I can see you have those and also recommended them.

please don't insult me. I'm trying to make sure he has as much information as possible. if that means backing up an unpopular opinion with objective science, then that's what I'll do

if you want to attack my argument, that's fine. feel free to poke holes in it. there is no need to attack me, and I don't appreciate having holes poked in me any more than the next guy.

Well I mean you're trying to spread false information..

Yes I would recommend them if you like strong bass and treble.

I know you guys might hate me for this one.

But how are the Solo2 (wired) ?

If there isnt a big difference I would go for these because they look better.

I never tried on ear before. Will that make the sound quality any different?

all of the information I can gather subjectively and objectively, through my own listening and other people's scientific testing shows that the bass isn't so anemic as you make it out to be.

Yes I would recommend them if you like strong bass and treble.

can't really comment on that, haven't heard them, nor can I find measurements, but they do cost almost twice as much, which is a bit of an issue when your budget is $200

I can still sleep at night confident I'm being honest, and on that note, it's 4:22 AM here and I have plans in the morning, so I must say goodnight.

surprisingly not terrible. I tried them on in the apple store and thought they sounded surprisingly okay. definitely still a fashion piece, but not a bad sounding fashion piece. I still like my headphones better, but they're not bad. I'd recommend trying them out. just about any best buy or apple store, or countless other stores will have them on display to try out.

I see the Solo2 for 149 Euro now in store.

Oh man they look so good....lol

I am getting fooled by appeareance. But yeah if the difference in audio or bass quality isnt that big I would still want to go for solo2.

The DT 990 Pro or DT 770 Pro seem fairly obvious here. DT 880 has no bass boost whatsoever, and so probably would not quality as "good bass" from the perspective of the OP. Plus, it's over budget. A (possibly used) Philips X1 would also be decent, though the non-removable pads are a turn-off for some.

If you really want the bass turned up, you could do worse than the V-Moda LP2, although of the cans suggested so far it's probably the least refined.

Solo 2 would actually not be terrible, but they are on-ear so I can't recommend something like that for listening for hours on end (comfort).

The v-moda are not the most comfortable with medium-large ears. My ears are medium, and the touch the (hard, metal, no padding) opposite side of the ear cup.

That's on my lp1, the lp2 have same frame.

If you don't mind going for on ear headphones and going up to 220$ the beyerdynamic dt1350 are amazing and have great bass.

The Sony mdr 1r are good over ears alternative they are warmer and more comfortable but I just found the dt1350 to be better in the sound department.

Since op wants bass, might as well recommend mdr-1a, no?

But beats solo 2's bass is really good, tight controlled bass while having that much quantity

1a is 300$ I think 1r and dt1350 will both be cheaper but yea the 1a can definitely fit if the op can afford them
