Questions about upgrading OS

So I'm running windows 8.1 on my desktop, laptop and my mom's laptop and I signed them all up for Windows 10 for free. Now when it comes out and I download windows 10 will it be like a fresh os and I'll lose all my stuff or will my files and crap transfer over ? I've never upgraded an os before so I don't know how it works.

nah, you won't loose your data (microsoft would get a lot of hate because of this) but you will have to re-install apps like games

oh ok. So will my steam games transfer ? Or will I have to re install programs ?

Nope, you will have to re-install them. Only text files and such are kept

 

Will a clean install be an option? I'd like to cleanly install it onto an ssd.

 

I think you can choose where you want to install the os

same but I want just the OS on the ssd but I still need all my files and crap. So u think what I'll do is put in an ssd install the OS then plug my hdd in with all my files

Ya I plan in getting an ssd during the Christmas sales but windows 10 is coming out this month :/
