Router overheating

My connection was really slow, then noticed that the router was extremely hot, could that affect the speed?

It could be that. Because my internet connection's lately been crap, and the router was so hot it nearly burned my fingers.

I found a usb to 2pin adapter in a cheap laptop cooling pad and plugged it into the usb on the back of the router and to a cougar fan.  it only runs the fan at 5v but its more than enough and dead silent.  I did this because this is the 3rd router in 6 months and all of them smell obscene like offgassing chemicals (cheap crap from century link, i think they're trying to kill us).  first one I exchanged because I figured it was defective.  second one I figure'd it would settle in and fade out.  the smell did but then so did the router after 6 months.

I turned it off and let it cool for a while, speeds are back to normal.
