Wtf BIOS update files?

Go to solution Solved by Samppa221,

Do as the manual says there should be a bios update section on the bios.

I downloaded the BIOS update so my processor can work with my motherboard but when I downloaded it it came in a zip/rar file, do I need the exe file that came with it? I know for sure I need the CAP file but if I need the exe file too then will I need the entire rar/zip file as well?

There are different types of BIOS updates. I know for a fact that ASRock, for example, releases three types of install model for the same BIOS. It looks like you have downloaded the .exe version, which can be updated through Windows or a file that contains all of the options. Either way, you need the CAP file only when updating it through the BIOS itself. You will not need the .exe nor the other things included in there.

One last thing is to check the BIOS install guide. It is usually quite thorough.

Asus P9D WS

Now that I see you have an ASUS board, they made a transition from the older style of BIOS to the new CAP file a while back. So check if you need to follow a specific procedure for the BIOS update, in case your existing one is not in the CAP format, or will end up wrecking your motherboard.

The exe is a auto updater what updates the cap file to the mobo and you can install the cap file only from bios from a usb stick if you want.

My plan is to put the renamed CAP file as instructed by the manual then put that on the formatted USB drive and put it into the flashback USB port on the motherboard and go from there, will that work?

I'd use EZFlash. Flashback is more of a recovery thing.

I don't think my board has it

It should do; it'd be under the tools area in the UEFI under advanced mode.

I've got boards 7 years old with EZFlash :)
