Another OS CD key question

Would I be able to use the XP Home SP1a disc that came with my old Compaq Presario R3000 (upgraded to a pro copy) with the CD key (for XP home) on my Asus A3H ? I lost the OEM installation disc for the Asus a while ago so the disc off my Compaq is the only safe copy of Windows XP I have (yes I have the black edition, but I do not trust it at all and I only use it for benchmarking).

The key may be tied to the Compaq system.

It was never actually installed on the Compaq though as I already had a copy of XP Pro for it (I miss the days where you had to install everything on your laptop).

Yes, but the key itself could've already been assigned to the PC.

Oh, well that sucks.

I mean, I don't know for sure - my Dell laptop had discs that would only work on another Dell PC.

Yes it will work but I have had problem reinstalling window with Microsoft flagging it as Non-genuine. If so use this program, WAT remover

I don't trust those programs, and I could do it myself anyway (I know exactly what needs to be modified).

WinXP is pretty liberate with keys. You can use any .ISO for matching key. And there aren't same kind of limitations with OEM and retail keys. I've traded XP Pro to XP HP, both laptop keys.

I've never tried using different keys with different OS versions outside of Windows 7, thanks for the info.

Oh, to clarify. You can't use XP Home Premium ISO with Professional key. The ISO and key will have to match. But they aren't same way mobo tied than keys from Vista ->
