I've asked some questions on here before, didn't get much help tho. I have two lists setup:

z97 setup - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TpvxdC

x99 setup - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NgZyrH

Now what I'm wondering is should I upgrade to x99, or should I just stay z97 and save like 200 - 300 dollars? This computer will be for ONLY gaming. Also, I'd like to note that I want to keep my build price AROUND 2,500 dollars, or below that. I have a budget of 3,000 for the computer but.. I'd like to save a little bit just incase something catches my eye tech wise. (like upcoming amd cards wondering if I should wait for my gpu till those come out HBM looks interesting)

As you can tell the lists are basically the same besides cpu / motherboard / ram. I'm pretty sold on everything else BUT, I am not aligned to any company on buying JUST their products. If you have anyway I could save money, or get better performance for cheaper by all means help me out. I'm down for any advice on my parts / builds as they are subject to change at any point in time. Thank you.

It's really a personal thing for you at thise point. You have a lot of money to spend, you're getting an i7 no matter what. Difference being the core count and chipset. Can't honestly recommend anything. :/

The woes of not waiting to buy a GPU when new releases hit soon.

z97 will be perfect, no need for x99 with extra cores. :)

CPU: Intel I7 4790K 4.8 Ghz || Mobo: ASUS ROG Maximus Hero 6 Z87 || Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1600 Mhz || GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Ti STRIX || Storage: 2 x SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB RAID 0 HDD Western Digital 1 TB Black || PSU: Corsair AX 860 watt || Cooling: 2 x AF 140mm (front), 2 AF120 Blue LED (bottom and back), 2 SP120 (top on radiator) ||  CPU cooler: Corsair H100i GTX || Case: Corsair obsidian 750D <3 <3 <3

99% of all games are optimized for high speed quad core processors and in some games (including gta 5 and many other mainstream games) more slower cores is just gonna degrade performance.

And high speed ram is not gonna give you better performance either as you trade latency. Perfect balance is around 1866mhz @ CL10 (latency).

Go with the Z97 platform imo.

Yeah, I've been redoing lists for like a week now, I think I have a pretty good price to performance ratio right now tho. But I'm sure there is always someway to squeeze something out for less money.

I was thinking that, since most games are optimized for quad core, but.. It's always wishful thinking that maybe a little bit of money might help in the long run.

I was typing a reply as you said this, lol. I haven't used anything faster than 1600 mhz ram before. And I never really noticed a problem, from what I see it doesn't affect things to make you want to breakdown and get frustrated. Thank you for the replies and insight.

I would personally go with X99 because it will last longer, especially with the extra core plus X99 is generally badass.

User1: I got that z97

You: Ha son, deez nuts i got x99

I see what you're saying, and I think the same. (what if soon games are optimized for 6 cores and performance increases substantially) but purely gaming, I'm starting to convince myself aswell a highly clocked quadcore is going to be the best bet for awhile. Tho the x99 is still tempting.. Being only 200 dollars more.

$200 more, 10/10 I would do it or wait till skylake if you don't want X99.

Get the G2 EVGA, the G1 is far from bad in the 1000W flavour but the G2 is better

I'm willing to wait another month, MAYBE 2 tops. Reason why I'm debating on waiting on the gpu to see if the new amd card with hbm is worth it. Tho the 295x2 is a powerhouse, the new 980 ti is tempting aswell (and also very fast) Decisions.. decisions..

I will look into this, thank you. I have only built 3 computers in ten years, and I don't stay up to date most of the time with tech. Gettin old man. :P

If you're happy with the price difference, go for X99. $200 is really not a huge amount of money and it will be far more "future-proof" (although we know such a thing doesn't exist with computer hardware) than Z97.

I'd go with X99, you'll never look back and wish you saved the extra 200 bucks. But if you get Z97, you'll wish you got X99 in a couple of years.

I guess you have a point. I'll think about it that way, I think the x99 would help if I wanted to do more than gaming on the pc also, but I probably wouldn't, as I have another computer for that. Still it makes sense not to skimp when it is close to prices with each other, and is a generation gap. I'll go back into my lists and rework some things, and see if the z97 build is more tempting if I add a few items to make it worth as much as the x99. Thanks for your advice.
