GTX 970 or Wait?

Go to solution Solved by C0LL0SS0S,

Wait until AMD releases their cards, maybe the 970 gets a price drop

Hello guys, I am trying to decide on whether I should buy the GTX 970 or wait until a possible refresh (maybe fix the 3.5gb ram to 4gb), or should I wait for a price drop? Currently $320 USD.

I am using a Gigabyte 650ti Boost as of now, so I know the upgrade will be quite big, so I'm pretty excited about it.

What are some predictions on if/when the 970 going down in price?

I do not want AMD, plz do not recommend it.

Also, I was thinking about getting the Asus Strix version of the 970, should I choose a different brand? Give a good reason plz.

Let's put it this way, you can always wait until the next generation because it will have better performance etc, but at some point you just have to jump in and buy something if you ever want to get an upgrade. If this is outside of your budget, I wouldn't get it until you can afford it, or you could just get a 960 or something less expensive.

Also, what is with all the AMD hate???

I am torn between Asus Strix vs MSI Gaming (Gigabyte too long for my case). Probably go for Asus because of backplate and little lower price

Also not sure if it's worth waiting more for AMD cards....... just tired of waiting..... Also at this budget it's rebrands I think, so is the waiting worth it?

Finally got PS4 Pro

How long until the release?

It's very unlikely that the price will drop. From the grape vine you should get the G1 970 because it's binned and is a great overclocker.

What does binned mean? In depth plz. Video or article to read is fine.

I don't really see a point in waiting much, the longer you wait, the sooner you will have to replace your card.

If you want to save some money, find a sale or a disscount.

You can't really go that wrong when buying a card from the big companies liek Asus, Gygabyte, MSI ... but in my opinion, the STRIX cards are one of the best and if I would be buying a card, I would buy a STRIX card, like I have done in the past. It's also usually the cheapest and offers a lot of performance and even easier overclocking.

Not to mention its silent operation...

For example, the fans won't even start when in idle or under light load, and it is all automatic and already configured.

And even when the fans do start, they usually don't go above 50% (unless you are stress testing) while still sufficiently cooling the card.

Of course, if you are a serious temps guy and want to go every step further to decrease your temps and maximize your Oc, you are going to want to set the fans to a bit more power, because the GPU runs above 60 C while under heavy load, so it does affect your general case air temp a bit.

So conclusion time:

Go out there and get a card on sale. You will probably find the STRIX card the cheapest or the besz one in its range, so buy that or spend a few extra bucks and get something else. Whatever you heart desires. But don't wait. Get a plan and stick to it. For example; you decide to catch a sale on one of the good ones and then you wait for it, tracking and monitoring the retailers, and when a sale comes, you grab the card. Because if you wait too long, new cards are going to be right around the corner, but you will be stuck with a slow card, tired of its poor performance and theres a chance you will rund in the store and get a card and then within a month, the next gen is going to come out.

Well, I would think there is always a sweet spot. I don't think the 960 is a big enough boost to upgrade to.

No comment on the AMD hate. No reason to start a war in the forums. :)

I am torn between the Asus to match my build and the EVGA for it's stock clocks.

I think I can wait that long. Not too bad. maybe a month before we see the drops.

Yea, I think I should get the Asus as well.

Matches my build, it was my original idea for my build. (Asus 970 or 980)

I've just heard there is possible coil wine, and I don't want any part of that.

There is not and won't be a "fix" for the memory, it was designed that way. The fix is to buy a 980 that doesn't have disabled parts. That being said the 970 is a great card.

Don't worry, I heard about the coil whine too before I ordered, but I still went for it and it's fine.

All the cards whine, not just the ones from Asus. But it's not like every card whines, it's just a few in like a hundred or a thousnad.
