So I built a Haswell 4770K with a H80i cooler and a Sabertooth Asus board.  I think I went overkill with the ram.  is 32gb to much?  Windows task manager reports without a swap file I don't use more then 8gb.  Is this normal or am I worrying about the small stuff since I haven't had any errors yet?

i7 4770k @4.3 || ASUS Sabertooth  || Samsung 840 250GB (Want another for raid) || Western Digital Black 1TB x2 || EVGA GTX660Ti x2  ||  Fractal Design R4|| Corsair H80 || Corsair Vengeance 32GB 1833@Mhz

Different types of applications stress different parts of the computer.  Whether it's overkill or not depends on what you intend to use the system for.

Generally speaking though, unless you are either running a server or doing heavy content creation work like video editing or 3D modelling, 16GB is already overkill by a lot.

Mostly games and encoding video with handbrake.  I use aftereffects a bit but not a lot.  Also I have diablo 3 running constantly in the background with a bot and for the last month no errors just making sure I wasn't the only one running this way and worrying about it.

Short answer, yes this is overkill... I find I can only just reach 25gb and I constantly run 4 or 5 VM's

I am good at computer

If it's not too late, you could still return your memory and get a cheaper kit of 8 or 16gigs.

You could also just sell/give away some of your ram.

what do you use the VM's for?

Virtual Machiney stuff, passthrough computers for a Kali OS. Testing all the questionable software that me and my friends find which is quite a lot. I have Windows 7, Windows 8, Ubuntu, Kali and occasionally XP running

I bet you'd love to have the console OS's leaked so you could VM that too and just play any random exclusive you wanted, lol.

and is that i7 at 5.1ghz 24/7.......if so are you trying to influence yourself to upgrade or something?

I'm actually not too fussed about console OS's. I think I'd only get them out of curiosity, I'm not much of a pirate so I'd probably just buy the console for the exclusive. But I'm also not much of a gamer either

It was at 5.1ghz 24/7 until I started folding, then I had to drop to 4.7 because of the temps. I But it has been 5.1 since I joined the forum a couple of months ago. And I'm definitely trying to influence myself to upgrade. I just hate that my case doesn't do watercooling. I'm getting a switch 810 shipped to me then I'm going to throw in a 360 and a 240 just for the CPU

it's not really about pirating,it's more about scaling the game up.

even if I had the console, having the option between playing on my pc,or my theoretical XBone/PS4,I'd pick my pc.......well if I had your pc.....not sure if my pc could handle upscaling games intended to run on an HD 7790 - HD 7850 level graphics card....

say that microsoft allowed you to buy the XBone OS standalone for windows for the same or a higher price, with multiplayer and all.

and say that console game dev's allowed you to raise graphics in games.

would you not prefer to run at 5760x1600 with more particle effects, higher AA,higher AF,maybe physX/TressFX,higher character detail, higher background detail, etc.

I can't quote on my phone so hopefully this just works @mvitkun

In the original scenario where I had a leaked OS, I'd have to have a pirated xbox/ps4 is.

I complain about my card, I bought it right before the 700 series cards came out. I'm kicking myself for it, but I don't think even my card can upscale too much

But if Microsoft and Sony did do Pc licencing which really won't ever happen then obviously I'd prefer to run with the higher quality. But I'm pretty unimpressed with my card at the moment, probably mainly because it's not a 780

Personally yes, overkill and in your case overkill. But hey, don't get rid of it. Keep the RAM, it just means you don't have to upgrade it for a long time.

System Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X

GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XT

RAM: 32GB 3600MHz

HDD: 1TB Sabrent NVMe -  WD 1TB Black - WD 2TB Green -  WD 4TB Blue

MB: Gigabyte  B550 Gaming X- RGB Disabled

PSU: Corsair RM850x 80 Plus Gold

Case: BeQuiet! Silent Base 801 Black

Cooler: Noctua NH-DH15

yeah I changed the scenario lol....DEAL WITH IT. :P

well.....you didn't buy the GTX 680 either Rofl.gif

...........I'm somewhat doubtful that you'd have bought the GTX 780 even if it had been out.

In my imagination, and I've thought this through more thoroughly than I should, they end up selling it as Windows exclusive (requires genuine windows 8.1 in order to allow XBone OS to boot),thus promoting their new OS.

the XBone OS costing $50-$100 more, because they want your money....badly.....pools of it.....and they'd use the excuse of "the extra money is put into a fund for developers that add extra features that can only be used to their full extent on more powerful hardware."

I can't see sony putting the PS4 OS up for sale though, nothing for them to gain.

though I can realistically see that at some point either there will be no consoles,or more realistically the consoles will be an OS download for the pc,or an executable that installs the games on the PC.

I needed more than 2gb of VRAM. So, 670

I don't think Microsaoft will, sure they need to promote 8.1 but in reality, everyone will end up usin it anyway. It's just how these things go especially with Microsoft's operating systems. In my opinion one of the biggest reason behind Xbox's whole always online thing was piracy and by releasing an OS it will make 1. People want to pirate the OS because of the steep prices that you mentioned before and 2, make people pirate games just like they already do for PC games

I think that quite the opposite will happen, I think that eventually there will be no more PC's. Consoles already have marketshare and they can do everything a PC does for a much lower price although PC's are still obviously better. You can see this happening with intel. They're moving away from PC, focussing on mobile platforms and all-in-ones

I highly doubt that consoles,the idea,as it is now,could replace PC's.

they're intended to be low maintenance (unupgradable),low-mid range parts, custom OS (preventing use of 3D,video editing programs).

consoles try to appeal to everyone, and by doing so isolate the enthusiast, because they can't keep a decent price point while having high end parts, and they can't keep high end status because of the lack of upgradability.

they could lock you in to only be able to access the game through the cloud+DRM(maybe push always on, on PC), or by forcing the game to connect to microsoft on say a weekly basis to make sure that the _______ that it was registered to is the only one accessing it.

or they could simply partner with Valve to create a steam or steam-like vendor for their XBone OS making that the only way to install games on the PC version, because everybody loves steam...........though with the bad PR B.O/aura around Microsoft Valve might just stay away.

I remembered Origin....but if they forced everyone to use Origin...and pay even more money, they would get laughed out of the market.

and I'm almost 1000% positive that there are GTX 680's with 4GB VRAM.

Also the 670 was the highest end card they had in stock, there was no way I was waiting another week for a 680

The enthusiast market consists of maybe up to a maximum of 300 million people.... Now compare that to the 3 billion who have access to any sort of computer/console. There just isn't any reason not to push computer-like consoles. Of course PC's will always be around for things like CAD. There aren't enough enthusiasts and/or professionals to stop consoles from becoming dominant and pushing PC users to a minority, for instance console gamers are going to be looking into tablets over PC's from now on due to most games pushing for tablet integration in their next-gen releases
