As a general rule I don't let anyone run drives that have yellow or red in CrystalDiskInfo (they're pretty trustworthy). You might not be able to get the data from it now, let alone later, so I would just dispose of it now (securely of course).

Well, then i gotta get a new hdd asap, but not sure when...

i guess i'll get a rugged one, because that hdd was in my laptop and then i took it off after installing my 500gb ssd and one day it fell down from my desk to floor....

Hey mosin40,

The S.M.A.R.T. status simply indicates the amount of spindle start/stop cycles. I would use the tool provided by the manufacturer for the most accurate data. for this particular drive that would be WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=5g7ua7

Other than that only the C5 atribute indicates only one pending sector which can be just a logical error on the drive. I would keep the drive and monitor the S.M.A.R.T. status more often to see if any of these attributes changes critically. Just to be on the safe side, you can back up your important data. :)

Yea. As Captain_WD said, the start/stop count being high is both unsurprising (external drives should spin down when not in use to save power/wear/etc) and not inherently bad. Stop/Start cycles *do* wear out drives, that is why they are tracked in SMART, but...a drive doesn't drop dead at a certain number of cycles. I'd make a backup (and keep a backup going) of any files on that external, or have a spare to take the external's place if it *is* the backup drive, but otherwise not worry.
