Hey I basically don't know anything about video editing and stuff like that so forgive me if this is a dumb question....

 

 

What advantage do I get increasing my bitrate past a certain point?  I'm just using that free GoPro software and it defaults to 25 MBPS and I usually increase it because I don't know I want a better quality but is that really necessary?   What point is upping the bitrate just a waste of my memory?

First use google play boy, better example there.

 

Instead of explain here is your answer in short. Higher Bit rate = better quality. If you want to upload it on youtube then for 1080p go around 20MPBS is fine.

 

Test it your self. Do 6 vs 15. See the difference, its major.

ok lol but its different for 4K, if you are just tell me and Ill get you the bit rate. You cant make your own answer :P

Higher bitrate video is much easier to grade and edit, low bitrate video falls apart during colour grading and editing, higher bitrate = more information captured by the camera

 

Think of it like shooting RAW vs shooting JPEG - if you shoot low bitrate video, it might look ok, but if you want to up the exposure to get some details out of the shadows, you will have better luck with higer bitrate video

 

The reason the gopro offers the high bitrate protune mode is so the footage can be colour graded
