So I have a fairly decent network connection:

But. I am using my stock router/modem from Comcast, and it's just not enough when my entire summer will be filled with LANs like this last one from this past weekend:

So, I was hoping for some Router, Modem, and 16 port switch suggestions. Because it's awful having only 4 people hardwired and everyone else on wifi unless they bring their own networking gear

speed test isn't a measure of your LAN speed. It is a measure of your Internet speed.

the information you've posted is irrelevant to your final question. If you want your LAN connection to be better then you'll want to either get a awesome router or a switch/hub.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

The modem and router are my problems, we can't have everyone connected at the same time. The reason we LAN here is my internet speed. But it's a problem getting everyone connected at once.

Which is why I said I was looking for suggestions for a router / modem / network switch

So... Everything I mentioned was relevant.

-snip-

Switch: TP-LINK or Netgear

Modem: Motorola

Wired + AP:

===========

Router: TP-LINK or Mikrotik

AP: Ubiquiti

Combo:

==============

Router: TP-LINK or ASUS

Here are a few suggestions based on experience with these products. I didn't know what kind of router you wanted so I went with two variants. I my self would get the first option, because the Ubiquiti APs are awesome and a wired router can do a lot of stuff (especially Mikrotik). Buuut you don't get 5Ghz with this setup. And that's where the combo comes in.

No. It's not. That's the entire reason this is an issue. If I didn't have a decent connection we would LAN somewhere else. Me having good speeds is the whole reason we LAN here. Which is why this issue exists..

Oh, I thought for some reason I saw battlefield.

Well, it sounds to me like you need another router (although I could be wrong).

If your modem is anything like the one that century link gave us, you should have four ethernet ports on the back of the modem. Run a router on each one that you need, and hook the computers to those routers.

That's if your trying to play as a group, connected to other people on the internet. If you're just playing local, I don't know what you're going to need. Still a bit of an amateur with networking.

There was a little bit of Battlefield played later in the night but only two people were playing. We had just finished setting up when that photo was taken.

We do have only 4 ports on the back of our router. I've been wanting to get a new router/modem combo but if a switch will work in my use case I'd rather take that option.

Is it the router, or the modem? The "modem" that century link gave us, is also a router in and of itself, that provides four ethernet ports. I hook my PC directly to that, but I have another two computers in other parts of the house, that are connected to a router, which connects to the "modem". Seeing as you have at least seven PC's, you could run two cables off of the modem, to two different routers, giving you a total of eight ethernet ports and an extra two on the modem (assuming the modem has four in total).

That would work, or at least I would think it would.

Comcast provided a router/modem unit. So only one physical box. Which is why I'd love to see if I could just use a switch and run only one ethernet cable to the LAN room permanently, then run all other ethernet in the room.

Umm.... I've never used a switch. But as far as I know, you would need a router to connect the switch to the internet.

Switches create a network, routers connect networks. That's about as deep as my understanding goes (so far)

^good place to look. As I don't know anything about setting up a switch.

The speed of your internet is fairly irrelevant for your question however...

If you run a network cable from one of the PC ports on your router to a switch then you can connect lots of people at once through 1 port

You can even connect switches to other switches to add even more ports

A little knowledge is very dangerous
