Upgrade to Windows 10?

You should probably wait 'til it's out to make that decision.

I like to play games and I was wondering if it was a good idea to upgrade to win 10 while it was free?

 

The best thing for gamers is the release of DX12, other than that it will be similar to Win7. And no, DX12 will not be compatible with Win7.

The upgrade is free for a year, if you upgrade within the year, you keep windows 10 for life for free (assuming you used a valid windows key :P)

 

If you want to upgrade after the year of free upgrades is over, you'll have to pay for it.

I just got a pop-up from Microsoft on Windows 7 telling me to reserve my free copy of Windows 10 earlier today.  I reserved it.  Supposed to notify me when its ready for install.  Hells yeah......

In any case, the current preview still has a lot of issues... So I wouldn't upgrade on day 1 if I were you. I'm just hoping they do something with the start menu before release... that alphabetical junk is ridiculous, so much scrolling required... They had the right idea in the early builds... then they ruined it again.

I have no idea why you'd need to reserve it lol. It seems legit though, and according to a google search it is.  Hopefully it doesn't download until the full release.  If it wants me to install a preview verison I'll just wait.

Yeah, I looked it up too. It's part of a "mysterious update" from Microsoft from a month or two ago. A new folder called "GWX" appeared in System32. Supposedly, running GWX.exe in that folder will make that screen pop up.. It didn't for me. It did absolutely nothing, didn't even launch (looked in task manager)

GWX, short for Get Windows 10...

From what I've read using Windows Update to do a search for new updates will trigger the prompt.  My prompt just happened to appear while I was out hiking, I noticed it when I got home.

Similar to the preview people are involved, there is a fast and slow you can be a part of. Fast for those who want the preview builds first hand and those who get the preview builds after it has been stabilized better. I am guessing those that reserve it get early release and those that have to wait. Maybe those who reserve it get a perk? who knows. Its Microsoft it could anything.

OR its just an advertising gimmick. So many variables. . . . . . <_<

I reckon that it is far more likely that they will stagger the downloads, to those who have reserved it, and that they will happen in the days leading up to the release so that they will not have everyone trying to download at the same time.
