What can a NAS Do?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

that depends what kind of NAS...

if its an actual PC connected to your network then yes

if its one of those compact NAS boxes that hold a couple drives and just connect to the network then no because you cant run any software on those things

A NAS is primarily a file storage server, hence the name Network Attached Storage. However, some can have additional functionality like managing Minecraft servers.

No Joe its just fancy storage.

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

I was only 9 years old. I loved Fifflaren so much, I had all the NiP merchandise and matches pirated. I prayed to Fifflaren every night before bed. Thanking him for the life I have been given. Fifflaren is love I say. Fifflaren is life. My dad hears and calls me a fuckhead. I knew he was just jelly of my passion for Fifflaren. I called him a Sw@yer. He hits me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now, and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel someone touching me. I feel someone touching me. It's Fifflaren. I am so happy. He whispers in my ear; "this is my pyjama". He grabs me with his powerful Swedish hands and puts me on my hands and knees. I'm ready. I spread my ass cheeks for Fifflaren. He penetrates my butt-hole. It hurts so much but I do it for Fifflaren. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Fifflaren. He roars a viking roar as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Fifflaren looks straight into his eyes and says; "He is a ninja now". Fifflaren is love, Fifflaren is life

NAS (Network Attached Storage) is not really designed for servers (other than file servers). It's designed for flexible storage solutions, a lot of the time serving multiple users.

A NAS is primarily a file storage server, hence the name Network Attached Storage. However, some can have additional functionality like managing Minecraft servers.

Well what would be the best device to host a game server thing. Not paying monthly

Well, a dedicated server for it. But it would also depend on the game. For something like a Minecraft server, your average mid range gaming PC is good enough for a smallish server while playing. For a larger server, you'd need more RAM, and a stronger CPU etc.

It would also depend on your budget, amount of players on the server, amount of data that needs to be processed and such.

Lets say a gmod server with 20 players and budget of 400-600 AUD

You could buy a cheap desktop and that would work good for a server as long as you have good enough upload speed. 200-300 would make you a very cheap one or 500 could get you one with a quad core or maybe quad with ht.

If you look around some forums that have questions about GMod servers, a lot of them say that the software isn't good for multicore support. (eg: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1176313)

It looks like it's not really that intensive, especially if you limit resources for each player. It will depend on your system though. I'd suggest searching around for people asking similar questions, looking for their responses and solutions, then decide if you want a dedicated server or not.

I host a Synergy (HL2 Co-op) server on the computer I play on (link to my build in sig) with 4 to 5 friends and see no drop in performance, and they have no issues. Plenty of CPU power left while doing that, just to give you an idea of what it takes.

Title say all. But I was just asking what can a NAS do, Like can it host a Teamspeak server and maybe a gmod or CSGO server.

Hey Pyroshank,

A NAS stands for Network Attached Storage and is basically any storage drive connected to a network that can be accessed through taht network. Basically if you connect an external drive to a router, you have a NAS. Some more complicated NAS devices offer additional features such as remote data and account management. Some even offer torrent clients and other useful features that can be configured and used remotely. There are NAS devices that offer PLEX and support third-party software. It really depends on what you need it for. I could suggest checking out WD's NAS solutions and see if any of them has what you are looking for: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Qmn2SS

For game servers and other similar usages you might consider building a small server of your own. It might be cheaper and some of the parts might have longer warranty. It is harder in terms of setting up and figuring out what exactly you need, but it might be the better choice. It really depends on what you need it for. :)

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
