The 980 is kinda overpriced unless you really want 4GB of VRAM or is loaded with cash the go for it but if not the 970 may be better for you. =o

i5 on a Z97 has 24 IIRC

Nvidia GPU's require a minimum of x8, but can use up to x16.  The performance difference between the two is negligible.

 

All Z97 CPU's support 16 PCI-E lanes, allowing for a single GPU or dual GPU configuration from Nvidia or a quadfire setup from AMD. (Is this even a thing anymore?  Other than the 295x2 CF)

eh I wouldn't want to use a 970 for 1440p either I would get a 970 if I was planning to sli, but for him I think a 980 would be best.

980 is about 20% faster than a 970. but its about 50% more expensive
