Long story short, a few days ago, I decided to format my hard drive, as I planned on doing so with both, my hard drive and SSD. The SSD has yet to be formatted. My hard drive, on the other hand, was formatted. However, after doing so, I am now facing a problem. Before I format my SSD, I want to recover some files using File History as I am running Windows 8.1. I want to recover a few important files and folders, which I was able to do before I formatted my HDD.

The problem, though, is that for some reason, while I am able to access my HDD through My Computer and view the files and folders currently on there, when I go to file history to recover some files from my SSD or even my file history settings, it tells me that my HDD is disconnected. I have tried trouble shooting, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Any and all answers of use will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey Chompus,

Are you trying to recover files that were on the HDD that was formatted, or files from the SSD? Or the problem is that you cannot set the HDD itself as a destination for storing the backups?

The files and folders were on my desktop, so my SSD.

Thats an odd error, I wonder if its not picking up the GUID of the drive properly. Have you moved it to a different SATA port or anything at all?

Perhaps try removing it from Device Manager (right click Uninstall) then scan for changes, to let it rescan the bus and re-add the drive - then give it another try
