GPU for 1440p

Go to solution Solved by orcinhell,

I think just because of the timing a 290X is properly going to be the winner I have seen some wicked sales because of the 300 series that is coming. The 980 is a brilliant card, but you pay a premium... Last time i checked its like 20% better performance for 30% more cost. If price is not a issue I would almost suggest 2 970's as they will smash the 980, even buying one for now and then another a few months down the track is a option.

That said there is no real wrong choice, each have pro's and con's price being a major pro for AMD. AMD has been in the spotlight for the Witcher but you can turn hair works etc off. If you plan on streaming AMD offer a 8GB version of the 290X (sapphire I think) which can be excellent for that.

If I was hell bent on wanting to stick to only 1 card personally I would go with the 980, if I didn't mind running 2 I would definitely go 1 970 followed by a second one after saving and if money was my main concern the 290X considering the sales that are coming/I have seen.

So I've been doing some research and I can't decide on a GPU for my build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/dyZJD3(980 in there for now as it is an upper limit)

I don't know what would be best at a 1440p resolution for gaming; a GTX 970, gtx 980 or an R9 290x (probably not reference for any of them, but I don't know which company to go with).

Which one offers best price to performance?

Is it worth the extra money for a 980 to try to future-proof my build?

Edit: Games I would be playing: (higher intensity) Witcher 3, Battlefield 4, Metro Last Light, Shadown of Mordor

(lower intensity) League of Legends, Dark Souls 2 etc

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I think I'll go for a 970 now and when I get it I'll see what the framerates are like; if they're on the lower side and I have to reduce graphical settings too much/it can't handle it, I will add another in SLI. I'd been thinking about getting an i7-4790k originally but I'll get an i5-4690k instead and spend the money on the extra 970 instead :)

I'd go with the 980. Would help to know what kind of games you play as well.

Intel i5-6600K, be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3, Asus MAXIMUS VIII Gene, 16gb Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4, 500gb Samsung 850 Evo, 2tb Seagate Barracuda, GTX 1080 EVGA FTW, Thermaltake Core v21, Seasonic M12II 850W

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

A GTX 970, R9 290x or a GTX 980 would do fine.

980 is best overall, but 290X is best price-to-performance. Compared to a 980 at stock speeds, it still keeps up darn well in most games that aren't biased towards Nvidia. https://youtu.be/_1UrI478K6A?t=4m59s

I'm not a fan of the 980 because you can get two 970s - and therefore a lot more power - for ~25% in price than the one 980.

The 290x is a great value but personally I'm put off by the energy usage.

I'd personally go with a 970, with an eye to adding a second in SLI down the road.

Do you think it's worth investing more money now to get a single 980 so that I then have the option to add another in a few years to maybe go 4k?

R9 290X if you want to save the monies. But if you dont care and just want to splurge out on a new card then the GTX 980 is the clear winner in nearly every situation and it will be fine for a good 3 maybe 4 years

If you have the money than yeah, two 980s will be better than two 970s.  In Canada I can get two 970's for $800, whereas two 980s will set me back $1300-1400.  So if I were in the market, I'd look to see if two 970s would be sufficient to do what I want at 1440p since the bang per buck is so much better.

BTW, that's a nice build!  The only thing I'm not sure of is that expensive Fractal Design cooler.  I love FD cases, but know nothing about their coolers.

I was actually needing some advice on this. Is a 360mm AIO overkill? I figured I didn't want to waste space in my case as the h440 supports 360mm in the top, but at the same time will a 240mm/280mm be plenty for an OC'd i5-4690k?

A 240 is plenty for a 4690K. I've kept 3 Titan Blacks and a 4960X at around 60-65 C under load with a single 280mm radiator...
