I'm running a 4790K with the stock cooler, it's idling @57 degrees C, and jumps to a little over 100 C when its fully loaded. Are these OK being that high or did i do something wrong?

100 °C is the temperature limit. It's way too high. Upgrade your cooling solution. It's not your fault, the Intel stock cooler is crap.

who cares...

57 @ idle, would indicate a bad mount.

Get some new thermal paste and re-apply the heatsink.

(Buying a Hyper 212 Evo would help to)

Even the stock heatsink shouldn't allow the CPU to get that hot.

Those temperatures are too high, try remounting your cooler and make sure that all of the pins are pushed through completely. If you have extra thermal paste laying around, replace that as well.

holy balls only 1/2 the pegs were in, and lately i have been researching a new cooler that would fit, as i am part of M-ITX master race :)

That's your problem most likely, push them all in and report back with temperatures.

could be also a problem of your case. What for a case do you have? Is in your case a possibility to mount fans on the top/are there any air intakes in the top?

i have a cooler master elite 120, there is a 80 mm fan pulling air away from one side, and it gets all the air it wants throught the top becuase i have an SFX PSU, which takes up very little space

The cooler should be able to sustain lower temperatures nonetheless.

its still hovering around 100 degrees

Is the cooler mounted properly? Do you have any thermal paste laying around?

idk if its properly mounted, and i have no thermal paste. could i try reusing the stock paste and remounting it?

Whenever you remove a cooler, it's a good idea to put fresh thermal paste on it. When you first installed it, did you hear snapping from all of the push pins? You should've.

read the above posts

That could very well be your problem then. They all need to be in.

Once you take off the cooler you decrease the efficency of the paste as you allow air gaps to form between the two plates the next time they come together, so while you could, its not suggested.

IF you really wanted to test it with a new paste W/O spending you could always use toothpaste.... I have done experiments on one of my computers with it and TP works well for short periods of time, as in a few days.

i recommend getting a liquid cooler, i have a 4790k too and it is an extremely powerful/hot chip to run. you do not want it to die. you should invest in a liquid cooler asap or even a very good heatsink. personally mine is liquid cooled and i got it to 4.8ghz before i blue screened on cs:go twice, then turning it down a lil. even at such high clock speeds i didnt get near 85 degrees c
