i wouldn't freak out over this. it could be driver related, or it could just be a glitch with msi afterburner. also did this happen when waking up the pc from sleep? no need to freak out over this though. at least not yet. definitely try rebooting and see if it keeps happening. if it does, completely uninstall your gpu drivers and msi afterburner, then reinstall the drivers. run without afterburner. if it happens again then try an older driver (and reinstall msi ab having ruled it out).

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

well it happened suddenly the pc was on for like 6hrs, so it wasn't a fresh boot, and im kinda scared because i bought this card from 3weeks ago.. so the speed now is 23% after uninstalling msi afterburner.. are you sure what happened was fine and it wasn't due to anything wrong with the gpu or caused anything from now on? :S

you removed msi afterburner and the problem went away. i am very sure that the problem was something set in msi afterburner. try downloading the latest version of it and make sure user control isn't enabled for fan speed.

also, if it was the gpu that was the problem, removing msi afterburner wouldn't have done anything. msi afterburner overrides the default fan profile in the graphic card's bios. if it was a problem with your graphics card it would still occur without msi afterburner installed. so now it is just trying to figure out why msi afterburner was doing that. which is probably due to either a glitch that popped up in the program, or the fan curve in msi afterburner might have been changed.

i believe you that it was on auto, and if you say you didn't change the fan curve i can't say that you did :P

but the problem was definitely with msi afterburner. i'm not a programmer so i can only guess at the cause but try reinstalling it. the fan speed going up like that due to a program glitch won't hurt your graphics card at all so don't be afraid to try it again.

no problem. i can understand that panic. that kind of panic kept me from overclocking in the past. as you learn more about the hardware you'll see that there's not much reason to worry unless you do something very... VERY stupid, like put 1.8v through a cpu lol. stuff like fans spinning faster than normal is definitely something to pay attention to, check your temps, if they aren't high it is usually a software problem.
