Your stock cooler if your not overclocking shouldn't get that high. Either thermal paste isn't right, it isn't seated correctly, or the fan isn't ramping up correctly. But an aftermarket is recommended if your overclocking. You can get a nice tower cooler for less that $50 that is boat loads better.

Try what Steep suggested. A better cooler will help, but these temperatures are just terrible, even for the stock cooler.

Prime95 is loading the cpu full of tasks, which you would never see in any application or game. Plus, you're using the stock cooler, so you will have extremely high temperatures anyways. You should look into another cooler.

Lower it back down to 3.9.

I dont think intel intends you to use it if your buying on of these chips.

Then they shouldn't include it. Get my reasoning?

If your mobo is increasing the boost to 4.2Ghz than it is messing with the voltages. Some boards are really bad at this feature and go to high and on top of that programs like prime 95 stress your system in an unreal fashion and draw even more voltage that it is set at. So you are getting extra voltage because of the increase in boost and increase with prime 95 running. That might be the problem. To much TDP for the heat sink.

Great. Report back if it doesn't fix the frequency issue.

Okay. 85 is certainly a bit smaller than 95-100.

I would recommend purchasing the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler. It's very low priced and will also help give you lower temperatures.
