Hello everyone.  I'm not really sure if this is the correct place to put this, but here we go.

I am wanting to build a server for my home/office space for me and my room-mates.  We want to have a shared server for all our media(Photos, Videos, files) that we can all access anytime and work from.

The only thing is, We have no idea where to start.  None of us are good with servers, and do not know that much about server building either.

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be wonderful.

So far this is the basic idea for the server.

CPU: ?

Motherboard: ?

PSU: ?

Memory: 64gb

Storage: 5-10tb's of ssd's

Case: ?

Any advice would be appreciated.  So far it is a rough idea, and we would really like to take it further for ourselves.

*At the time, price is not a factor, we are only trying to figure what we should get, or try for the project.*

If you're just using it as a NAS, you won't need a ton of processing power, or a ton of RAM either.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I don't think you need a 10 tb array of ssds for a normal user.

Only Linus is mad enough to do that.

Prediction: Watch out, he'll make a 24 PCIe server one day!

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

I'm waiting for that day.

As for OP, maybe just 1 of intels 750 NVM SSDs then a bunch of HDDs.

Basically The server will be used for editing our videos, photos, etc..

It will also hold other media, and a ton of video game related projects for our own needs/wants.

and yeah the 10tb is overkill but we thought it would be fun to have.  With the projects we want to start we thought it would be plenty of space for all our storage needs.

Yes. We would need it for processing power as well as storage.
