Ok, so I have upgraded my motherboard to a Maximus 7 Formula. and I want to purchase the HyperX Predator PCIe SSD. Obviously i wont be able to use the SSD in the included M.2 slot, as the slot only allows for shorter cards. So that means that i will have to use the SSD in the PCIe configuration. What im concerned about tho is the PCIe speeds. I will only be running a single GTX 980 GPU, and the board only has a single slot that is wired for 16x speeds. the second PCIe slot os a 3.0 8x slot and the last slot is a 2.0 4xs slot.

So if i plug the Predator into the bottom PCIe slot, that is rated as a 2.0 4x slot, will i get full speeds out of my SSD? If i do plug it into the bottom slot on the motherboard will i still be able to get full 16x speeds out of my GPU? And is there any way to tell if a GPU is running at 16x speeds?

You wont have any bottlenecks by that, Why did you upgrade your motherboard?

I upgraded my board because ill be graduating school here really soon and i wanted an upgrade of hardware. ill be upgrading to the 4790k so i needed a new board. plus the old board was like 4 years old, and its just time for an upgrade!

So ill still be able to run my GPU at x16 speeds? and the SSD is okay if its in a gen 2 x4 slot? I just feel like the SSD may be slowed down by the x4 speeds. maybie not, im not too sure when it comes to PCIe storage

The Predator is a 2.0 x4 drive so the last slot is perfect. It draws lanes from the PCH and not the CPU so the video card will still run at 3.0 x16.

Not that it matters really, x8 vs x16 is almost no difference in performance.

yeah, i guess your right, there really hasn't been a performance improvement when you go to x16 from x8. but still its nice to know everything will work perfect. thanks so much! And yeah, from the bits and pieces i was getting the last slot was gonna be perfect, but i just wanted to make ABSOLUTELY sure, ya know? best to hear it from people.

But okay, what about the SATA ports.. will I lose sata ports if i plug the drive into the bottom slot?

@Aibohphobia Ok, I guess that's something i can be okay with losing. a regular SATA port and an SSD will be enough for a game library i guess. It would be nice to have both, but meh, a SUPER fast boot SSD that can also have a few important programs is worth it, even if i have to lose a couple SATA Express ports.

Are their any other devices that run off of M.2 that could be worth it? its gonna be an ultimate build and i would hate to see the M.2 port go to waste.

Haven't really looked into compatibility issues but the only thing I can think of other than a SSD is a M.2 AC wireless card.
