Cheap Server

I am pretty good with PCs but I am not the best when it comes to servers and stuff like that. I would like to build a server that isn't too extreme price wise. I know you can have like 2 xeons or 4 in a rack. But can you also have like 8 GPUs? I am a noob to this so any extra knowledge will help.

Server is a very broad term. There's probably hundreds of different server uses. Game server? HTTP? Access? FTP? and so on. 

 

To suggest hardware, we'd need to know the use, as well as the sort of load you're expecting. For most servers, GPUs are pointless, and you'll be focused on RAM, CPU and storage. Some servers that can be used for rendering or something will focus more on GPU power, but it's not going to be gaming cards, more likely Quadros and other workstation cards.

I see I guess that might be important. I don't have a super main idea for it but I might use it to host files or a render farm. I might occasionally host a game on it too. I know that doesn't help but it sorta wanna just mess around and see what I like then build a better one or add on to it. Mostly rendering though.

I see I guess that might be important. I don't have a super main idea for it but I might use it to host files or a render farm. I might occasionally host a game on it too. I know that doesn't help but it sorta wanna just mess around and see what I like then build a better one or add on to it. Mostly rendering though.

If you're looking for something useful, a HTPC may be a better idea. You can use it as a sort of NAS/storage server, as well as putting something like XBMC on it for media playback. The Anniversary Pentium can do fairly well for an HTPC and is pretty cheap.

If you're looking for something useful, a HTPC may be a better idea. You can use it as a sort of NAS/storage server, as well as putting something like XBMC on it for media playback. The Anniversary Pentium can do fairly well for an HTPC and is pretty cheap. 

 

But you're not gonna run a game server like he said on a HTPC...
