Hey Guys!

I want to buy my mom a new laptop I have 2 choices really the Macbook AIr (Used) with an SSD or the Asus Q series laptop without an SSD the processor that powers the laptop is pretty much the same (Intel i5) ,but the macbook costs more obviously so which one would you guys recommend

1) Macbook Air - http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B005CWIRPG/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all[662$]

2) Macbook AIr http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005CWIRPG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2UR4RYINOCAUH[578$]

And now the ASUS which is also used (refurbished from GeekSquad) and fulfilled by Amazon

It should be the exact same processor on both laptops but then again depending on the real purpose of the laptop (If watching movies and tv series) then the Macbook should fair as good as the Asus one. Otherwise the Asus one seems more fit for duty especially since for an extra 60-80$ you can get a 128gb ssd and the extra ram could be helpful futurly :P

Id say Asus, Mainly becouse it has more storage and 8gb of RAM, But as @Viper9 says, If she already is using Windows she should stay with Windows and if she is used to Mac OS she should stay on Mac OS.

If she isn't tech savvy, the mac will probably better suited to here. The easy way to judge is by how much malware she managed to accumulate on her previous computer. If the answer is lots, you will probably be better with the mac.

Your mother you say? well maybe I am wrong, but for her using a SSD will most likely benefit alot. Browsing files, opening them will be faster, I am pretty sure you know that but other factors like "used" kind of bothered me, but imo Mac is really easy and simple to use, even though there are features missing if you compare it to a windows OS but I don't think she'll ever even need them. I have never owned a mac but I have used many different versions fairly in school or some relatives mac's. But I would say go with which ever is the newest and with warranty

A mac will also get malware without a antivirus.

Not strictly so, there is pretty much no malware written for OS X and there is pretty good security throughout the system. Also, the fact that software is limited to the app store and signed devs, which is what I would recommend for inexperienced users such as the subject of this topic, making it pretty much impossible for malware to get into the system. I have run macs alongside windows machines for about 10 years. In that time, all of the macs that I have owned have been completely free of trouble. And as a general rule of thumb they are generally more reliable.

I'd say the ASUS+SSD, especially if she's one of those people who has a hundred tabs open and will use that extra 4GB RAM. My mother routinely has over a hundred tabs open for example.

Also, you'd have a 750GB HDD lying around. Could be useful.

I don't do signatures.

I thought we were past the entire "macs don't get viruses" thing

I'm gonna give a pretty unpopular opinion here. I do not nearly trust an ASUS "refurbished" notebook. Make 1000% sure if you get that ASUS notebook that you are capable of returning it for a refund if anything goes wrong, at least for a full year after getting it.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

I would say the MacBook purely for the trackpad. You can always install windows on it after if that's an issue.

unfortunately not ... otherwise people wouldn't write:

"A mac will also get malware without a antivirus."

I'd say it is almost impossible to get any malware when your system is (automatically) updated and you don't download and install pirated software from some shady sources.

I use a macbook air with very similar specs to that except it was released May last year. I'd choose the Macbook without a second though, they're amazing in build quality, weight and convenience and performance with 4GB of RAM a 128GB SSD and i5 will be absolutely fine for her I'm sure.

1. It is a Proof of concept and no word is lost about how you get that malware. You most likely have to install it by entering your admin password.

2. You won't get shit with normal usage. don't download pirated stuff an chances are very very high you will never see any kind of malware on your Mac. And even when you pirate stuff, chances are still low

3. OS X has a built in anti virus / anti malware. Most people just don't know or need to know about it.
