Processor and chipset

As long as the sockets match they are compatible. So any 1150 processor will be compatible with any 1150 MoBo. But some old chipsets like z87(has 1150 socket) will

still require a BIOS update so I suggest going for a z97 or h97 chipset. The h97 would be better since you won't be needing the high OC capabilities of the z97

This is the techquickie on chipsets. It should help you understand better.

This processor will work perfectly fine with a Z97 board, however it has no unlocked multiplier, so you can't use the "Z" features. You can save money by getting an H97 board instead.

Hi there,

I have been planning to build my first ever PC (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6XBtdC). And while choosing a motherboard I saw something like CHIPSET and then I looked at my processor in the list to check whether it was compatible with the same chipset or not. But, there was nothing mentioned. So, I'm a bit confused whether a processor with a compatible socket works fine with a motherboard or it also depends on the chipset.

As far as I have understood, I think that the chipset is a measure of the number of components on the motherboard that the processor can communicate with. Also, It determines at what speeds that communication can be achieved. Please tell me if I got it right?

Thanks.

There's always a way...

Please tell me which component/s are out of balance ??

Your video card and memory are awful you want at least 8gb of memory(16gb is preferred) and a nvidia 970(960 if you have to) i would say.

Won't that be an overkill for casual gaming...

get 8gb of ram as a minimum and find the best gpu you can fit in your budget

Edit: your budget is 600 dollars

4gb is inherently bad unless you are at the bottom barrel and stuck, and for casual gaming a 960 i would call a bare minimum for acceptable performance down the road(a 970 would still have a longer working life potentially if you only use it lightly i dont max stuff out by habit is at a very good price)

Thanks for the list, very much under budget. But could you also mention what made you change each of those components. Bcuz since I'm new to PC building, I would like to know where I am going wrong.

Alright im done.

FIrst of all, the 4460 that you picked is the same as the 4440 but with 100mhz more, not worth considering you would need either a BIOS updated b85 or h81 motherboard, or get a much pricier h97 motherboard.

The 4440 allowed me to pair it with a cheap motherboard that is of a reputable brand and will do it's job quite well considering the motherboard doesn't affect the performance.

With the money that were saved i decided to go all out on the GPU(r9 280x) which is YEARS better than that crappy GT 740.

8 GBs of RAM makes everything smoother and will be plenty for quite some time more, also by going with 1 stick it allows you to just add another 8gb stick of the SAME ram as this one for dual channel operation and 16gbs of RAM, cause this motherboard only has 2 RAM slots.

PSU is of better build quality, and the HDD as well.

Okay, Take your time. But, I just saw that video card is just not gonna fit inside my microATX case.

It's gonna fit, it just means some drive bays won't be usable, for example, if the case had 2 HDD bays the nthe 1 won't be usable, not that it matters.

1 bay can keep 3-4 drives at most cases.
