BItcoin Identification?

I was looking into getting into buying and selling bitcoin, but when i asked for my passport, held by my dad, he asked why, I said for bitcoin, which he has a negative opinion of because of his lack of knowledge, and when i said i needed to give out my SSN he freaked out.  I need to prepare a lesson to explain to him why it is ok, why it is safe (identity theft wise, this is his main concern, obviously i could lose money), and why do they need this info from me?

give me enough information to convince a stubborn person who has enough computer knowledge to email people and make word documents.

so many people use this website, if it wasn't safe, why do people use it, and why wouldn't there be any stoires of identity theft because of bitcoin sites.
