I'm going to be painting some ram but I have a few questions.

1) removing the Heatshrink requires a great gun, can it be damaged by higher temps if it is not in use? (within reason)

2) how do I re-apply the heatsinks and keep them properly lined up?

3) would it be better to just mask everything off and paint?

1. What? do you mean the ram if it doesn't have a heat spreader on it? if so, then no, it shouldn't get damaged from slightly higher temps.

2. Depends on the RAM.

3. Probably.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I was referring to the fact that I have to point a heat gun at the little memory modules to separate the thermal adhesive strip. I was asking if they can be damaged by that, if the ram isn't in the system and being used.

It shouldn't be a problem set the heat gun on low of course and try to heat the metal heatspreader more than the actual PCB if you do overheat it, it can desolder stuff so keep it moving and don't sit on one spot.

So for reapply the heatinsk I would mark the PCB where the lowest edge or pint lines up so you can reapply it in the same location.

Ah, your original post said "Great gun" and it all just went down hill from there :P

As long as you don't heat the ram too much it will be fine, be sure to keep the heat gun moving across it and not in one place if you can help it.

Sorry about that, I'm on my phone and autocorrect can be a brutal and unforgiving mistress. Ruined high-school for me when it turned "call of Duty black ops" into "call of Duty blackcocks"

Good idea marking it, duly noted. In your opinion, will going through the process of taking it apart, painting, putting it back together be worth it over just masking and painting? Will it look better?

Taking it apart is more work but will ensure no paint gets on the PCB's.

It depends some RAM have very open heatspeaders where paint can get in and masking can't be done while others are all closed in and just covering the contacts and a bit of the PCB will suffice. What RAM are you planning to paint.

Doesn't autocorrect typically correct "mistakes" that you have corrected yourself in the past or use common words/phrases from your history to decide that stuff? :P

It's crucial ballistix sport, I can't imagine that small amounts of paint on the pcb would be detrimental. It does have a very open design

Oh I see, that could be masked just make sure to tuck the masking tape under the heatsink to prevent as much overspray from getting onto the PCB, shouldn't be a problem also less work.

In theory spray paint isn't that bad the only thing to worry about is the chemicals trying to bite into the PCB since it's designed to get good adhesion.

Would plastidip be less corrosive?

About the same but it is removable if you plan to go back to the original color scheme. It's not a super big worry as long as you aren't coating the PCB but there have been individuals on the forums who have spray painted their entire PCB with no problems.
