Trying to boot into a live CD (not burned) of Ubuntu and I'm getting a screen like this: http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r589/linuxbyexamples/MiniXpOnRam/XpOnRam12.png. Same happens with Mint, why is this happening? Doesn't seem to happen to Live USBs. I did try to (and seem to) succeed in (re)installing Ubuntu 14.04 from USB, but when selecting Ubuntu from the grub menu I get (what I can only presume is) a kernel panic screen.

On a completely different point, I'm curious how do Macs (old and current) handle updates?

Heyyo,

Hmm, trying NTLDR? What version of Windows are you trying to load? Check your BIOS settings. If you're indeed running that Gigabyte motherboard from your signature link? Check if your DVD drive is set to load as EFI or MBR. You might have to set it to MBR if you're trying to load Windows XP as I don't think it supports EFI. I think Windows Vista is when EFI support was added.. but I could be wrong. :P

The reason I say this? I dunno if that Z77 board is like my Gigabyte Z68... but my Z68 only supports EFI booting via DVD drives. USB boots to MBR by default.

Macs? They update just fine... but going from say, Snow Leopard to Yosemite? You have to purchase the upgrades I think... but I can't remember lol, it's been a while since I tinkered with Macs and Hackintosh. The software changes between each version of OSX isn't extreme in comparison to say, Windows XP to Vista to 7.
