[HELP] How to remove a menu item in your control panel

Hello everyone,

I downloaded a tool wich adds the good old Windows 7 Gadgets to Windows 8 but I didnt liked it and started to deleting files since there was no uninstall function at all.

My questions is now: HOW can I remove those menu items?

Could you tell us what software you used?

That way I can install it on a VM at home and uninstall it again :P

I know you can remove the gadgets in the context menu through registry edits...

This should help with the first: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

You can also do it by hand in regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

To remove it from Control Panel locate the .cpl file associated with it in C:\Windows\System32

Just search for .cpl and find the file the is from it(checking times may help) once you locate it delete it and refresh explorer. (close and reopen control Panel

I have not done anything with the control panel before but, have been successful with registry edits to remove things from the context menu...

You can also try under the program name itself in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\program name

Lets wait to see if the guy installing it on his VM makes any progress, if not I will doom my own computer and look into it for you ;)

I hope you can get it. I just deleted more and more files wich are related to the tool from the installation folder and from the registry but it's still there v_v

I did it today and just had a couple of restarts in between. Im not used to this. Never had to use it :S

Not a fan of windows 8 stock either...

I should mention that I'm at work right now and it will be a wile before I can try it at home.

Just thinking out loud for now.

Also weird that the restore didn't do the trick.

PS: this is why I'm always over careful when installing stuff I don't know, I usually try it in a VM first or I make a restore-point and Registry backup.

Actually its not a huge problem. I just dont want to have it there because its just looks shitty and not that clean anymore.

Fixed it...

I don't know how to write regedit scripts so I'm looking it up so you can just run a script and remove everything...

Sorry it took so long, had to dig around in the registry and make sure I got all the rogue files...

Here it is, I am not sure if it will need elevated permissions as it is editing the registry... (I have UAC off and was lazy)

Instructions:

Download
Unzip the contents
Right click on "RUN_ME" and select "Run As Administrator"
Restart the computer
Repeat steps 3 and 4 one more time and you are done :) (script should run twice and you should restart twice)

Tried it a few times here and was good :D (on a x64 system but, I have the lines in to fix it for x86 as well)

The reason I have you run it twice is to delete the files that may have been running the first time. Not quite sure how to force close them so I just delete what calls them then delete them <_<

That's great but what it is actually doing is hiding the entries on a the UI level if that is what you're after

you can stop reading now.

If it's not, I would reinstall it using the original installer and remove any trace of it via Revo Uninstaller.

Because I'm pretty confident it left orphaned entries around.

You should try it yourself before you come in here and pretend you have a clue what is going on...

What you suggested is the first thing I tried, revo did not find it at all let alone do anything with it...

Saying my fix is just removing it from the UI without looking at my file itself is an incredibly ignorant move...

I went through the scripts and deleted/edited every change they made in both the file-system and in the registry.

I could have made a more professional uninstaller and suggested backups before but, I am not a batch/powershell programmer. I saw no reason to put that much effort into an adhoc program.

What you suggested is the first thing I tried, revo did not find it at all let alone do anything with it...

Saying my fix is just removing it from the UI without looking at my file itself is an incredibly ignorant move...

I went through the scripts and deleted/edited every change they made in both the file-system and in the registry.

I could have made a more professional uninstaller and suggested backups before but, I am not a batch/powershell programmer. I saw no reason to put that much effort into an adhoc program.

I stand corrected.
