So my buddy is getting a new laptop, hes mostly going to use it for shcool work but also some casual gaming, like COD and CS:GO w/ mods.

Will any of these suffice?

  • Intel Core i5-4210M 2.6 GHz Dual Core
  • 8 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT840M - 2GB
  • 1 TB HDD + 8 GB Cache SSD

or

  • AMD A8-5550M 2.1Ghz Quad Core
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Dual AMD Radeon HD 8550G/8750M +2GB
  • 1 TB HDD

Which one of these will offer the best performance? Best framerate and best graphical quality in game? And how big of a difference is there between them?

Oh sorry, :/ i didn't know, how can i move it?

Unfortunately you can't :L

Only mods can do that...

OH! Your question. He should get the first one as the second one will CHEW power like it's a sandwich. With laptops it is better to get the least hardware possible as more hardware = more power consumption.

Power consumption aside, does the first one offer better performance aswell?

No, not at all.

Will they be pretty much the same?

Yeah, the CPU in the first one is a bit better. That won't make much of a different.

The second one MAY have a tad (tiny, almost unnoticeable) better performance increase in games. But that doesn't make up for the loss in battery.

In COD and CS:GO how far will he be able to push the graphics and how much FPS?

I don't think CSGO will be the limiting factor. It's pretty light on the requirements an APU could run it without much difficulties, maybe just reduce effects such as AA. So the discrete options should work fine for that game.

COD will be the one that will be affected more, but I have no experience and limited knowledge of the requirements for that game and how demanding it is.

I can run CS:GO fine as Ariana Grande on my crappy HP laptop.

What COD? COD isn't that much of a demanding game. For AW maybe medium settings with a solid 60 FPS (Maybe)

Honestly, I think your friend should buy a standard laptop for school and build a console killer PC for games. I'll explain why :)

  • When a laptop has a GPU in it the battery life of the laptop is significantly reduced. And I mean that, my friend has an MSI laptop and it holds about 2 hrs when just word processing and searching the web. Not ideal for a long day at school.
  • Much heavier, makes the shoulders ache a bit after a while.

But the main thing is just that laptop hardware is not meant for gaming :( The main reason people buy laptops is because of the convenience that comes with it's size.

SOLUTION: Your friend should buy a standard, cheap laptop he will use for school. Then make a console killer-type PC that he can run his games on at home. If you like I can make you a console killer part list.
