Need help building a gaming pc

Go to solution Solved by Aytex,

If i'm comparing msi z97 with asus z97-a, which one is better? my budget for motherboard is under 150$

their both great, just pick which one you like the most

do you plan on doing video editing or rendering? if not then i would suggest an i5 4690k instead as there would be no performance difference in gaming between the two. use the money saved to get an ssd or something :)

motherboards essentially differ based on features. a good choice for a motherboard would be the asus z97-A. its what i have and it is just a solid motherboard. it has a great bios and excellent control for overclocking. gigabyte makes great boards too. but the z97-a is a great board for a pretty low price (around 130 or so USD)

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

I'll be working on Solidworks a lot.. so should i stay with i7 4790k or go for i5 4690K?

z97-a.. alright! great great! thanks man!

If you could provide a bit more info like:

What is the main use for the PC?

What country are you buying the parts in?

What is your budget on the Build?

Are you looking for peripherals like mouse, keyboard or monitor?

These answers will help in putting something together for you.

Stick to Z97 chip set s for best performance and feature sets. Get a good aftermarket cooler. Hyper 212 Evo on the low end and Noctua NHD15 on the high. BeQuiet Dark Rock/Shadow Rock coolers are good too. AIOs can be handy like the Corsair H100.

If its for gaming only, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 (2x4) is optimal, but 16GB won't hurt. Don't waste money on 32GB.

Get a 120 or 240gb SSD for your OS drive and a 1 or 2tb HDD for your games and whatever else.

For a case... Well its up to your tastes. For instance I like subtle like the Anidees AI6. Or the Enthoo. Fractal Define R4s are good too. There's lot sof choices but research whatever one you choose, because some may not support certain coolers, especially AIO rads.

PSU is a big one. Get a good name brand and go for more than you need. 850W is the best baseline. You can get a good EVGA G2 or a Seasonic unit for decent prices. Modular is best for cable management and good air flow. Generally avoid cheaper Corsair units, but anything above the RM series is generally reliable.

.... That's all I got right now lol.

Damn mobile.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Gaming and CAD designing. I'm in Malaysia, so i supposed i'm getting them in here? but i could do some online shopping from in here too. My budget is around 900$ to 1000$. And no, I'm just looking for the pc  :)

definitely stick with the i7. solidworks is multithreaded i believe so you'll see more performance with the i7

as for msi boards, i'm not a big fan of msi, i have only used one of their boards so i can't speak to the quality of their boards so much. Most of my boards have been asus, and all of them have lasted longer than the pcs they were put into (except the z97-A, i just got that one a couple months back :P). I'm sure MSI makes good boards, especially for intel cpus. I've been very impressed with the Z97-A so I have no problems recommending it to anyone. It is definitely one to keep in mind.

Damn that's a lot of information! I'll have to research each of them first but still, thanks for pointing out for me!  :)

If you're near KL, see if you have some time to check out Plaza Low Yat. You can usually find something there on a good deal if you're willing to spend the time. Online will have lower average prices for sure, but it's not as fun.

Sometimes i feel like the shops in Plaza Low Yat is trying to rip you off but i think i'll do some research on the price first before i go and check it out! anyway, thanks for the recommendation!

Well if your not looking to OC this build might work with your budget.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1241 V3 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($264.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($109.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: A-Data XPG V1.0 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($48.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($114.99 @ Directron)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card  ($307.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($57.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $1037.38
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you might OC and want the 4.GHz clocked CPU this is very similar.

16GB ram rather than the 8GB and the SSD was removed to stay close to budget.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($279.99 @ Micro Center)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($109.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: A-Data XPG V1.0 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($48.99 @ Newegg)

Probably not ideal builds but with the budget it's not bad.

For sure, anyone in Bukit Bintang will be trying to rip off some tourists, or everyone else to be honest. You definitely need to haggle to get better prices, never take what they offer at first and try to bring them proof of another shop selling something cheaper. (Sometimes you get those little pamphlets showing prices from some shops).

It's definitely an experience.
