6TB Hard Drive Options

Cwis3man

Trying to decided between the following-

WD 6TB Red - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236737

WD 6TB Green - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-236-797

HGST Deskstar NAS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145973

I'm currently using 4TB WD Green drives in my main and media server, wanting to go to 6TB, but unsure which to go with. I've seen that HGST drives have a lower failure rate then the WD drives, and unsure if the increased disk speed is worth the higher price point. Which would you go for in a Media Center PC? I don't have plans to use Raid as of now as everything is backed up between the two PCs weekly, but may go with it in the future.

HGST drives are mainly focused on nas and mas media storage, its also a company owned by WD as well

For reliability this is the way I would go HGST, WD reds, WD blacks, seagate barracudas, and wd green

Hey Cwis3man,

For servers, RAID and cloud access I would recommend going with WD Red. It has a cool, quiet and reliable performance, optimized for NAS and cloud access and has additional feature over regular drives that enable it to be more reliable, stable and to have more optimized performance under these specific conditions. Here's a bit more info on that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=HUqXOs
WD Green is also a good storage drive that can do the job, but it lacks a few features that would otherwise make it optimized for cloud storage. :)

I just wish the WD Green/Red drives ran at 7200 RPM, would make my decision so much easier!

I think for now I will be going with the HGST Drives in my Media center, I'll go with the WD Red Drives in my NAS.

Well, you can check out WD Red Pro drives. They have the features of WD Red, but are 7,200 rpm, have longer warranty and are optimized for larger drive pools (8 to 16 drives). Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=KJhTOS
Sadly, currently they only go up to 4TB in capacity.

And, also sadly, they are way more expensive than normal Reds.
