H97 vs Z97

Go to solution Solved by Caloon,

Never the less take Z97, just to be on the safe side. If you won't be using sli take Msi z97 gaming 3.

Currently i'm building a new pc and I'll take Msi Z97 gaming 5 (just because of sli support).

Overclocking on H97 would be risky.

Hope this help!

I;m going to buy anew mother board and i'm confused ! some people tell me that i can OC i5 4690K with h97 Mobo ! and others tell me that i must get a z97 for overclocking ! i wouldn't overclock it too much ! around 4.4/4.5 GHz !
and i could hardly get a z97 mobo and i won't use sli !
so Can the job be done with msi H97 Gaming 3 mobo ? or i must get a MSI  z97 gaming?
thanks in advance

only Z series boards can overclock LGA 1150 chips (such as the 4690k)

You can't do serious overclocking on a H97 chipset. The most you can do is raise the bclk a bit, not the multiplier.

Intel i7 7700K | MSI Z270 Gaming M3 | MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X| Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4 3000Mhz Samsung EVO 850 250GB | WD Blue 1TB | Corsair CS650M | Thermalright Macho Rev. A | NZXT S340

CM Storm Quickfire TK [MX Blues] | Zowie FK1 |  Kingston HyperX Cloud

Z97 is made for overclocking, it's always better to overclock with "Z" motherboard (Z87 & Z97). You can still do overclock besides "Z" motherboard like H97 but it has less capability to overclock.

Yeah there's only a handful of H97s that allow overclocking. The H87s had more options previously, but considering the price parity its better to just spend the little extra for a Z board and not have to worry.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.
