It's possible that the switch also controls the wall outlet

Is there any way to prevent that?

You would have to rewire it. The reason it is like that is because the switch is wired for a lamp that in theory would be continually plugged in and on so when you flip the switch the lamp would be on/off just like any other light. (I have a switch like this in the apartment I currently live in) Turning the power supply off would probably solve this problem.

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

Yup. My apartment has the same thing.

All a light switch does is cut a cable connection to a circuit, said circuit must also contain your computers power outlet, the way's solve this are to:
1) Get an extension cord to another outlet

2) keep the switch up and get another way of turning off the light (Such as a wireless switch?)

3) Have an electrician (or yourself if YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING.) Rewire the circuit so your computers outlet is independent of the switch.

Be very careful, Electricity can easily Kill you or cause a fire, killing others.
